Yeah, I'm only playing it at night.

Really, really stunning. Sit in a dark attic with a vaguely decent 5.1
surround system and you will wet yourself at some point....

I've got a Radeon 8500 128Mb card in my computer and that's running it on
    'medium' and 800x600.
I was looking at prices of FX5700 cards until now :-/

    STFU, the lot of you.

I don't want to know this, OK? I don't want to know how good it
looks, how wonderful it sounds or how fantastically scary it is. I
can't afford it nor a PC good enough to run it.

I shall mostly be sulking for a while now.

    Anybody seen any top-posters recently?

Pip, if you find yourself my South London way of a dark winter evening,
please drop by, sink some cheap beers and then visit my attic for as long
    as you want....

Or wait a couple of years, when a PC capable of running Doom3 at its limits
will cost £50 on eBay. Patience is everything, and there's always
    Solitaire.

Queer, that. I thought of you as I replied to the above

    OTOH, according to this:
    http://www2.hardocp.com/article.html?art=NjQ0LDU=

Running it shouldn't be terribly problematic. I suspect that the
real-world experience will differ however - and how many people run
    Corsair RAM in budget machines?

I think you can probably experience much of what's great about it on a
relatively low-spec machine - but it does need tweaking. There's a lot
tweakable, and I don't think ID have paid much attention to automating the
config to accommodate anything much more than a year or so old.

But I think it really needs kit better than I have (Radeon 9500, Athlon
2600, 512Mb) to appreciate it at its very best. Always the case really
    innit.

The brand won't make any difference at standard CPU clocking, or even
    minor overclocking..

I'm running nice cheap ADATA PC2700 stuff on an Athlon XP2500+ (Mildly
OC'd to just outperform the 2800+ whilst running *cold*)... I went for
the generation out of date cheap option of computing, I always do, it
    pays to..

It looks like the graphics card is the killer though, my radeon 9600pro
would only just be up to the job at 800x600, apparently. Should have
    got the 9800.

It's supposed to be superfast, innit. Selected chips and all that -
that's ostensibly why it is four times the price.
Exactly. I'm looking at rebuilding mine - Chris and Tuppy revived it
from the dead over the weekend, and with borrowed power supply and
video card and an excised dodgy hard drive it is working again. It is
apparently on its last legs, so I'm looking at 300 quid for new mobo,
CPU, A gig of RAM and a decent sized hard drive. Hopefully my Ti4800
graphics card will be replaced under warranty, as the fan burnt out
after 14 months of use. 1024x768 is a big step bigger iyswim after
    being used to 1280x1024 ;-)
Always the way, innit. I lashed out on the one-from-the-bleeding-edge
card 14 months ago, to enable running UT2k3 on min-spec cpu and RAM
and without it things look pretty grim. **** me, but the new ones
    haven't come down in price.
