you can make yer digital do infra-red by playing around a bit. requires the
correct filter.

 

that's the rub, isn't it. top-end digitals are getting near to film quality
now, but cost and arm and a leg.

 

That said, used digi SLRs are a bargain because they depreciate so fast.

Still, an AF film SLR costs.... what, a couple of hundred quid, used,
with a standard lens? My basic Nikon F50 (cheap hack camera) was less
than that with a 35-100 zoom, used. Something like £100, IIRC.

So yes, way cheaper.

 

I think you can get digital backs for quarter-plate cameras, but they cost
both arms and both legs, and the legs have to go all the way up to your
arse.

It is. They're simply scanning the trannie film it uses. Which goes to
show just how good the resolution can be on film cameras. ;-)

 

Actually, _removing_ the correct filter. That bit that makes webcams
have a reddish cast to their lenses, à la HAL in 2001. I pulled it out of
a cheap £5 webcam and now can track a LaserJet laser-diode unit over rather
large distances...
