Can the FOAK explain to me the who and how of all the domain
names/extensions of things like (for instance) surname and town names. Most
seem to be registered and yet don't resolve or sit at a holding page.

It presumable costs a great deal of money to keep thousands of names
registered so, or am I missing something obvious. I know of the odd name
that's been bought from a squatter for serious money (O2) but I'm not aware
of individuals and village councils raiding the piggy banks daily.

Domain registration costs sod all. About £2 per year for .co.uk,
    slightly more for .com.

More like £20something is it not? but regardless why would people sit on
thousands of them at some cost.

Nope. I just had a stack of mine re-registered.

    uni-us.com ----- £10.45

Can't recall if that is 3 or 4 years.
Been thinking about that. I *suspect* that some of them are not being
sat on, but companies are generating spurious DNS resolution for
    un-registered domains.

Also (again IIRC since it's been rather a long time) I *think* that if
you are a registrar, you don't have to pay to register, but you can
    charge IYSWIM.

Some of them may simply be left over from the land grab.

Give me an example and I'll dig a bit and see if I can work it out.

  5. What you see on a web page doesn't mean the domain name isn't in use.

Not quite answering your question but:

    <dons foil hat>

I have a sneaking suspicion that some websites that purport to be
'domain name checkers', actually go away and register the domain you are
enquiring about there and then, with the hope to be able to sell it on
    later.

  7. I would imagine you are absolutely correct in that suspicion.

Maybe they're just not using them for a web page at all. I've got a
domain that I only use for email - doesn't mean it's not in use
    though.

Well I was looking at some possible company names specifically but if you
take (for instance) my surname macduff @ co.uk which I know has been
registered and re-registered for 15 years at least but never used.

I just found this http://services.tucows.com/personalnames which is
something of a pointer to what is going on.

Well, never used as a webpage, perhaps. I'm not sure that any of us can
state that it's never been used for other things, like email or even ftp.
    Interesting.

I was offered the .co.uk version of my .com domain name (small letting
agency) for about a grand. It wasn't even registered it so I did it
    myself! Cheeky fuckers.

All it takes is the odd company to be taken in by this, so I imagine
    it is a lucrative business...

For web? No, nor have any of the domains I own & use.
Are there any MX records for it?
