Domain name advice

I've had champ.org.uk registered with SimplyNames (who I believe are
owned by NamesCo nowadays) for about 10 years now. Every two years or
so they sting me 20 quid to renew it. The renewal has just come
through, at 20 quid + VAT.

I've realised that my hosting provider, PurpleCloud, will register
this for me for £7.50. Which seems a worthwhile saving. But I can't
seem to work out how to transfer the registration from SimplyNames to
PurpleCloud. No doubt SimplyNames don't make it obvious, but still.

    Can anyone advise?

Forget it, I've found it in the SimplyNames FAQ - and they charge a
tenner to transfer away. Which somewhat removes the value of doing
    it.

    It's fairly straightforward.

For .uk domains there is a "TAG" which you need to change using the
    simply control panel to "PURPLECLOUD".

It's all on these two pages:

    http://www.purplecloud.com/domains/transfer_in.jsp
    http://www.simplynames.com/domains-faqs.html?section=1&category=2&question=

The first time, maybe. I have our names registered with Fasthosts, and
I'm sure it's only about 8 quid or so to renew every two years, so I
expect Purplecloud may be the same.

You're quite right of course - Purplecloud only charge £7.50 to renew,
so I'll be saving money even the first time, and definitely next time.

  7. As long as the name servers are updated and continue to point at your
    hosting, all should be well.

It's fairly easy to check that purplecloud have set up their DNS
correctly before the transfer happens - use this tool here

    http://www.kloth.net/services/dig.php

    Use server = ns1.purpledns.net

    then check the following

    Domain Query result
champ.org.uk NS should return several name servers ending
    in purpledns.net
champ.org.uk MX should point to 91.194.74.34
    www.champ.org.uk A should point to 91.194.74.34

I've just checked in fact, it all looks OK.

Sounds a bit steep. I've just paid £5.98 to renew each of my UK domains
for another two years with 123-reg.

Many thanks, but it *ought* to look ok because, while SimplyNames are
the registering organisation, PurpleCloud have been my hosting
provider, including DNS, for some years. So all I'm actually
transfering is the responsibility of doing the registration renewal.

    I think...

1&1 are even less IIRC. I was paying about 35 quid for a .com every
couple of years, and each renewal time inertia stopped me from changing,
especially as they wanted £35 to move away. Done it now, wasn't too
difficult although it felt like both sides asked for confirmation about
10 times - I guess that was reassuring that it wouldn't be so easy to
    nick a domain name.

I'm actually with UKReg, with I think are part of Fasthosts, and it
    was £6.79. Close enough.

That's not massively cheaper than £7.50 for two years, is it?

You'll save more than the cost of a litre of petrol! If you put that
petrol into a 50cc moped that saving will buy you maybe 30 miles.
During that trip you might find a fiver someone dropped on the ground
(you'll be going slow enough to see it). You might spend that fiver on
some lottery tickets and win big.

So don't dismiss the saving! :)

In that case you should be fine. I've done this a few times with various
providers and even when they've cocked it up the end result was just a
failure to transfer (so just staying with the old name servers) rather
than dropping the domain into a black hole.

Especially as it's plus VAT so really £6.90.

Nadgers, i've been cyber squatting on my own domain name for a while
now, pending the enthusiasm to do something with it, but that's
    costing me £20 every 2 years.. :/
