Dodgy Lemans frame? I think so.

Another dodgy Ebay frame advertised "with no V5" as "it was for a special".
I asked about the frame number so I could check it out and possibly apply
for a V5 from Swansea on the existing frame number, but the guy comes back
    with:
"as the frame has been powder coated i can`t see the number and without
scratching it off i can`t tell if it has a number.I don`t want to ruin the
    frame, i hope you understand".
Yep, I 'understand'. Another one crossed off the list........

  2. Hmmmm.... Powder coating certainly obscures frame numbers. The problem
is that without a chassis number, you can't get an MoT these days.

I'd have walked away from it as well.

    Wotcha.
Yep - my friendly MOT chappie has to actually see and record the frame
number. It's no good just taking the log book with you . . . if he can't
see it, then it doesn't get tested. I did scrape all the paint off the
headstock on the 'big' trike so we could both see the number - I then
stamped the same number onto a plate and riveted the plate next to the
engine mountings where it is fairly visible and not likely to get covered in
shite. Luckily the VW has its number on a separate plate anyway.

Argh - just thought. The Enfield has had the frame powder coated . . . .
..and that went for ( and passed ) MOT a couple of weeks back. . . .good job
the tester is a club member ;-)

There is no reason to think powder coating a chassis means its dodgy in
some way. As to a reg number, its pretty easy to make up your own
chassis number, and apply to DVLC for an age related plate! There again
people as knowledgeable as you lot wouldnt need to be told that would
    you?

    Not true.

My '82 Vespa has an obscured VIN (overpainted) and the computer MOT
    certificate just says "Not Found".

As does mine but unfortunately the wiring loom rubbing has worn out the
    printed number.

He's permitted to record it as "Not Found".

  8. Right. Interesting, that. I remember my local MoT place refusing to
aissue an MoT to a bloke with a Suzuki RGV250 whose frame number had
    been deliberately erased.

Owner had bought the bike from the small ads board at Brands Hatch....

I'd just stamp a new number in, any old number will do.
