Dodgy cheap bikes!?

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Nick Phillips, Jun 30, 2004.

  1. I spoted an ad for a GSXR750 on Biketrader last week with the
    following link on it: http://shop.vendio.com/coolmybike

All the bikes on there where high end sports bikes with very low
mileage going for peanuts BUT they are apparent US imports. I decided
to email the guy to find out what the deal was and here is the email I
    got in response:
    <start>
From the first you most know that we are currently in Romania, Alba
..I'm ready to send the bike at your place via DHL COD .All the
shipping taxes will be payed by me you don't need to worry about that.
If you want to close the deal whit me please give to me your full name
and address and i will shipp you the bike at your address whit DHL
    COD.
I will go and i will send the bike at your place and then DHL will
contact you in your email address.DHL will give you the confirmation
    that i send the bike.
You will go and you will send the money using Western Union and then
you will give to DHL all the payment detalies.
Then UPS will shipp the package at your address and in 2 day's the
bike will be at your place.
When you recive the package DHL will give to me all the payment
detalies to be able to pick up the money.
In the unlikely event that you receive a defective item, you have 7
business days from the time that you receive your product to contact
    us for an exchange.
I will issue you a Return Authorization number and send you
    instructions.
If you accept my method of shipping please reply me a.s.a.p whit your
full name and address and i will shipp you the bike.
    <end>

Is this as they say "too good to be true" and am I just naive to think
I could get a bargin (I have come to terms with the fact that even IF
the bikes are real they are more than likley going to be less than
    legitimate).

And what hassles are associated with trying to register a non-EU
    impoted bike?

Thanks in advance for any advice/comments and please not too much
    abuse at my stupity )

    Take it easy - Nick

Well that's as maybe, but your real problems will start earlier, when
Customs & Excise demand that you pay car tax and VAT on them. How much
cheaper than the UK are they?
As long as you've got the documentation, should be no problem. Ivan's
    done this most recently, IIRC.
Advice? Give it a miss, I would.

    Bad sign number 1
    Bad sugn number 2.

Once you have paid by WU that will be the last you ever hear from them.
These bikes do not exist and you will never receive any goods.

Yeah, but at least he'd get a forged DHL document for his money - you're
    offering him bog all.

Actually I'm a bit puzzled by this, assuming it is a scam.

The seller mentions WU, but doesn't talk about paying the money directly to
them. Instead the buyer gives the transfer details to DHL once they get an
    e-mail from them.

Fair enough, an e-mail from DHL is easy enough to forge, but the scam would
then have to rely upon the buyer using a link in the e-mail to give the
transfer details to DHL, which seems like a bit of a long shot.

What happens if they contact DHL directly or notice that the link given
doesn't link to DHL? Why not have them send the money direct to the buyer
    via WU?

If I was the OP I'd be tempted to write back and ask if another method of
payment is possible, i.e. escrow agency and see what the seller says.

SCAM!!!! Romania is a MAJOR source of online trading scams
SCAM!!! COD means Cash On Delivery so why a payment via Western Union (the
    scammers favourite payment method)?

SCAM!!! - He was talking about payment by Western Union a few lines back
SCAM!!! Actually there is a grain of truth in this - it is very unlikely
that you will receive a defective item because you won't receive ANY kind of
    item
SCAM!!! In the unlikely event that any 'instructions' are forthcoming I
suspect they would read "take your complaint and stick it up your arse"

So, all in all, there is a fairly high probability that this is a SCAM!!!

    This I found interesting:

I didn't know they did that.

It helps keep folks on their toes I suppose.
