Do you rely on a disc lock?

    Well, do you? When you leave your bike all safe and sound, do you
    rely on locks with cylinder-type keys as security? It may be worth
    your while to have a look at the movies that are linked from this
    thread if you do:
    http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?s=48e7ea037478ce12c576875292ead32e&t=66128&page=1&pp=25

    I wonder if this is an elaborate windup, as these locks have been
    touted as being pick-proof for years, and a lot of "Sold Secure" bike
    locks use them - and to get a SS label they have to resist the
    attempts of 'professional theives' to break them for five minutes,
    iirc.

    What do you think?

  3. Not a wind up. Common knowledge.

    Here's a picture of one of the more affordable jobbies:

    Not that I know anything about picking locks.

    <watches kryptonite ev disc lock vid>

    Bugger. I've got one of them.

    <gets kryptonite ev disc lock>
    <gets bic biro>
    <breaks pen>

    <some pens later>

    I couldn't do it, so in conclusion I'm shit at nicking my own bike.

    I'm sure I heard years ago (possibly in a DiRE report) that those
    cylinder locks were pickable in seconds with the correct equipment, and
    that they shouldn't be relied on in isolation.

    In that case, what's the point of having the lock. How much are these
    things anyway?

    From what I could tell from the vids, I don't think a bic is what you
    want - the plastic's too brittle, see?

    I think you need a pen made of a plastic that's slightly more malleable,
    but I haven't got my disk lock to hand to try it out.

    I think that if some bastard wants to nick my bike then, assuming they're
    not insane (it *is* a Triumph!), they're welcome to it if they can get round
    the disc lock[1], normal-key u-lock[1], alarm and immobiliser - if they're
    that desperate to nick it from my garage then I'd rather they took it and
    fucked off than having to hang around, thus forcing me to try and defend an
    inanimate object and put myself in the line of their bolt
    croppers/crowbars/empty biros...

  10. Nope! I rely on the sidecar. Not easy to stuff both in the back of a
    Transit van, and if they manage to ride it away the chances are they'll
    kill themselves, or attract the attention of the local A&E department,
    in no time flat.

  11. For show.
    Next to nothing. ITYF they're the same type as the vending machine
    locks, spesh the cheap ones.

    BTW, are you busy next week? If the weather's good and I can negotiate a
    week off, I could possibly come down to the field of Uck one day...

    It's strange. I have two of the same disclock, one of which I have opened
    about 20 - 30 times now tonight with a biro, and the other which won't open
    with the biro method at all.

    No, they're the ones that the charities send you for free. Not the BIC's at
