It's not all about money, it's about organisation.

Schools opted out of local 'control' and other schools responsible for
their own budget. No local quality control, only Ofsted [1], no ability
of the local government through the LEA to address imbalances in local
provision. Every school having to hold sufficient reserves to cover
possibly emergencies instead of one pot being held centrally (requiring
less money). Individual schools seeing only their budget, becoming
unwilling to employ experienced, and therefore more expensive, teachers,
when brand spanking new ones are available.
    etc....

Even further centralisation of the curriculum: in maths for example,
the whole year's scheme of work is set my government now, even down to
how each lesson should be planned, with no option for an experienced
teacher to use their own professional judgement.

Not only that, a furthering of these types of policies, such as
increasing parental choice (which is no choice at all for most),etc.. again.

Education and free market are not good bedfellows IMHO.

    rant over.

  7. In which case I would have to fall back on consciencious objection..
Or this - becuase it's not my dislike of politicians that leads me to
not vote - it's my religious belief.
I wouldn't personally - but I can understand why my rules apply to very
few others and that for the majority it would indeed be a very big
    thing to be disenfrancised.

  8. Indeed. Just as a nationalised health service and free market are
    contradictory.

  9. Sigh. Have you utterly lost your sense of humour? Does not the "he says
modestly" bit actually suggest that I was poking fun at myself?
Get a grip Champ - you are starting to lose it.

higher than that cos I'm very good at doing IQ tests :)

How on earth can voting be against your religious belief? Isn't that
just a huge abdication of responsibility?

    Don't JW's refuse to vote?
Something with not being a part of a corrupt society?

What, that corrupt society for which they pay taxes, drive on
maintained roads, have their bins emptied, are defended by its armed
forces, use its hospitals etc etc etc ?

  19. Point of order. Jim Fixx had a congenital heart defect which was diagnosed
in his early 30s [IIRC], and took up gentle running - which he termed
jogging - in an attempt to keep fit without putting too much strain on his
heart. He did pretty well to last as long as he did.
