I think I covered that earlier. Lthough I wasn't coming at it from a 'can't
be arsed' to vote perspective. More a 'can't make a sensible distinction
between two un-favourable alternatives, and not happy to allow either of
them to speak with my support' as it were.
IMO, in this seat, there is little point in voting for anything either than
the big two. Labour have (AIUI) a pretty huge majority. I don't want to
vote conservative, so it seems that voting Lib Dem is pretty much a waste.

    My options are
    1) Vote labour. Which I don't want to do since I depsise Blair and co (and
I don't want them speaking on my behalf) Although the economy seems, to one
as un-versed in these matters as myself, to be in pretty good shape since
    they came to power
    2) Vote conservative. Which I don't want to do since I depsise Howard and co
(and I don't want them speaking on my behalf) Although I prefer their
policies on such things as ID cards
    3) Vote Lib Dem, the party for which I have the most respect, but who have 0
chance of getting into power in this seat, let alone nationaly.

Morally I want to vote Lib Dem, but effectively I may as well not bother.

The point you seem to be missing, is voting is all well and good, if you're
given a defined choice; three slightly different varieties of the 'same shit
reheated', isn't a choice as such.

Give us some *real* choices... then mock those who don't vote.

  7. It does. It *really* does.

The one political weapon, the only political ever, that most ordinary
people can wield is their vote.

If you don't vote and whinge about whoever's in power, you've only
yourself to blame because you did not exercise to right to try and stop
    them.

But you *can't* stop them. So what use is the 'weapon'?

Stop what exactly? Stop a potential government pandering to the masses and
failing to address relevant issues? Stop a government from smoke-screening
its lies behind popularist bullshit? Force a government to be accountable to
the electorate? Stop business conducting itself through government?

The winners are big business which will carry on regardless of who gets in.
What are people voting for btw? The greater good or their own well-being,
    their family's well being?

We can't stop anything, because no one cares about dealing with the
important issues. We care about bullshit like ID cards and cheaky freebies
nabbed by high profile government figures. Government: The Soap Opera.

Frankly, I'll whinge about it all I like, whether I decide to put a cross in
    a box or not.

****, I *so* wanted to stay out of this as it just made me realise that for
the first time in years I actually do care about the outcome of an
    election.

    And I obviously can't vote...

<rides off to Boston to chuck teabags into the river>

Well, if you don't feel that there's a candidate or party that represents
your views then there's always the option of setting up your own.

I'd hazard a guess that there may be enough people willing to vote for a
'Common Sense' party that caters to those disillusioned by the current shit
    shower(s).

In a proper democracy, saying that there's no-one who represents your views
and thus you withdraw from the whole democratic process is what ensures
that the more "radical" views[1] get an unfair representation mainly
because those people who are bothered by them actually get off their arses
and vote while those who don't often just go down to the pub and and moan
    into their beers.

The problem, AIUI, is that an indpendant party, as you suggest, has exaclty
0 chance of winning a moajority under the current system without a
*serious* amount of funding, even simply to field candidates in all seats.
