Do I really need to use PULP.

Discussion in 'Australian Motorcycles' started by Richard Kirkwood, Aug 26, 2003.

  1. one for the "performance" gurus out there.

When I purchased my current babe (Fiona the FJR1300), the dealer stated that
I should only run PULP in it due to the fact that -
    1. It is a high performance fuel injected engine.
    2. The mapping of the FCU was set for PULP.

Was I given the bums rush?

I have only run Super/LRP/unleaded bikes before. I see a lot of comment from
    "sportsbike" (R1, GSXR1000/750/600, CBRR954/900/600, Ducati etc) riders
about the benefits of using PULP and the performance improvements it
    delivers.

I am not into "performance" I am a classic plodder tourer, stick to the
speed limits 99% of the time with the occasional rush of blood and twist of
    the wrist.

My question is do I risk potential damage to the bike by opting to use
    standard unleaded?

Call me a scot/Jew but I would rather save the 10c + per litre and run ULP
instead of PULP if its not really necessary.

I would appreciate learned and constructive feedback without it denigrating
into a literary debate unrelated to what I have asked.

run unleaded and see how it goes... if it pings go back to pulp, if not it
shouldnt do too much harm i wouldnt think.

Run the best fuel and oil you can buy, its cheaper than an engine rebuild.

  4. I agree with this totally. People whinge bout service costs and
intervals, but work out what a Donk would be to rebuild.

You actually save more money buy using good fuel. Not only do you get better
mileage, and hence instant savings, the engine will last a bit longer too.

Now if we keep to bikes we can agree more often.

Use whatever fuel you want. Your engine will be fine. It won't ping as the ECU will have a knock sensor. People talking of engine
rebuilds. Pfft. An FJR1300 ridden sedately will last longer than the rider.

    Hi Jules,

That's because such a rider would have to be in his/her 90s and with 30 km/h
eyesight. All that mumbo ridden sedately??? Naaaah - 'twould be a crime,
    eh Richard?? :)

I dunno... sometimes I wonder if the large amount extra spent on quality
fuel and oils over the years is really worth whatever extra length of
    time the engine goes for...
obviously if the bike pings on ulp then it won't be lasting that long,
so pulp is a good investment :)

The FZR600 runs PULP all the time, even though I don't think it makes a big
difference in a carby bike. I mean what are we talking about? $1 a tank? $50
a year maybe? If there's any question about whether PULP is beneficial I'll
go with PULP. It certainly doesn't hurt and the piece of mind is well worth
    $50 a year.

    Hey Richard

Usually the main concern or reason for PULP is compression ratio. Ie, does it REALLY need it, or is it just a
matter or increased performance and reduced pinging. I had a look at the specs on the Yamaha site and it
states the FJR1300 has a comp ratio of 10.8:1 which would sit firmly in the comfortable region of ULP. I'de
use ULP if you like during the week, and fill up with PULP when you go for a ride on the weekend. That's what
I used to do before my current bike ('00 ZX6R) with a comp ratio of 12.8:1 which means I have to fill up with
PULP all the time. You should notice the difference with PULP, definately a crisper engine response and
    increased fuel economy.

wow you really do have too much time on your hands ;-)

My R6 doesn't knock on regular unleaded, so I highly doubt the FJR would

FWIW, I use premium generally because the better fuel economy is helpful on
a bike that scarcely gets 200km to a tank.

Shit the fuel economy must have dropped a bit then. I get 250km minimum before reserve during street riding on
a '00 model. Then again, I don't go all out and red line it through traffic either.....
