    Depends on your water hardness, if you are in a soft water area, then you
    *should* be OK, I would not recommend it at all for hard water running at
    all.

    Equally only use fully synthetic salt, not the mineral variety.

    YMMV.

    I'm using Ecover at the moment. Predictably, it's "not as good as normal
    stuff". I shall be going back to Waitrose own brand.

    Indeed. Also, their fabric softener is a breeding ground for mould, and
    their non-bio washing powder doesn't dissolve in water.
