Yes, I meant that they wouldn't have parallel cold circuits in the
same place. Hence the dishwasher, tending to be in the kitchen, would
nearly always be off an un-softened supply.

  3. A boiler/water heated, central heating system would normally require a
header tank. Plus a hot water system would have a header tank unless it
was a direct heated water system or boiler heated with a pressurised hot
water tank ( They have an expansion ball on top of them.)

There was a requirement once (early 1900s) that only one tap was
permitted to be connected directly to the mains and the cold water tank
in the roof space should contain sufficient water for a family for a
    week.
All my cold water mains pressure taps go through a softener including
the feed to the dish washer with one tap for drinking water that does
not go through the softener but through a filter system. I think this is
the norm now in the UK.

I am far from the most pedantic poster here. In fact, I'm rarely
being pedantic, per se, more often just attempting to broaden a
persons vista wrt to the subject at hand, and perhaps provide
another angle which will help round out their conceptual cognizance.

    HTH.

    *ding* Loik what moin has.

I don't think it is, unless you're talking just the last year or so.
Most houses still have no built-in softener or filter, although most
recent ones certainly have the kitchen cold supply (normally including
utility room and any other appliance feeds) direct from the mains.

  11. I'm agreeing with you but I didn't put it clearly.

For the last few years in the UK, if you fit a water softener it usually
comes with a direct feed un-softened for drinking and this will come
    with its own filter system.

OIC, the norm for softener/filter systems.
