Can understand the eyes closed thing.....

I have had two occasions in my life where I really seriously thought I might
be about to die - and I bloody shut my eyes in both of them..... I don't
understand why.... it wasn't anything to do with pain., cos in both cases I
think the adrenalin kick-in ensured I felt no immediate pain whatsoever....
so... Ostrich syndrome???? (if I can't see it, it won't hurt???) Would be
interested in understanding that reaction. Anybody got ideas (or knowledge)
    on that?

What you do doesn't only include the last 500 metres.

under brakes the bike was about 70 cm to long :(

( 500 B.S.A single with rigid tail ( so the brakes sucked)

I almost wrote my bike off at 60 into a lowside.
You can sometimes do less damage at a high speed.

I DID write my bike off at less than 60 in a low-side!

Well , at least your mate didn't watch you die on the side of the road.
I can tell you that is a very sobering experience :(

  9. People on motorcycles have died as a result of ramming mountains at 60
km/h; your injuries suggest either you were very lucky or you were
travelling quite a bit slower at the point of impact. Or both.

In any event all I meant was that expecting someone, who has just
survived a "Fark I'm gunna die" moment, to be able to accurately assess
    their speed is, well, silly.

Wishing you a speedy recovery anyway.

An upright bike hitting the brakes on wet grass will result in a bike on
    it's side anyway.

yes, i am very gratefull that he didn't. I felt pretty bad he saw wat
he did, let alone anything worse. He tells me it was a big reality
    check for him

No, you're definitely right. I only have a vague idea it was that
fast, only figured so because i'm not dead....and thats because i
didn't go head first into the blasted section of rock. I consider
myself very lucky that i flipped upside down.

    Thanks for the well wishes
