Disabled Bikers?

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Bales1983 (Lee Bales), Nov 21, 2004.

  1. Hi all,

I have cerebral palsy and sometimes find it hard using my legs, I was
wondering if there are any disabled bikers here? Ive always wanted to
ride a bike but never tried,

I have full feeling in my legs its just I have trouble lifting my leg
over things so bigger bikes are probably out of the question, but maybe
a cruiser will be ok, Im thinking of getting a Shadow 125 type thing as
they are lower hence easier to mount.

Im thinking of a Lifan-Hongda Diable Prince or an x-stream Crusader
. I totally realise that they are not top notch examples but im not
that well off. I hear the Lifan is modelled on the Solid CG125 Honda
    engine?
As a bike are these any good for a beginner? Any suggestions for budget
    but value types of 125?

One more question is, If i leave my bike on the stand will i be able to
put my foot on a footrest then lift myself on making it easier or will
    it break the rest/stand.

Thanks for any help or advice guys

Can you put your feet down when stationary to support you and the bike - and
can you do it quickly enough in an emergency?

Beat me to it. Bales, have you considered a trike at all?

Im wondering if you have difficulty using your legs, you are talking about
continualish use of the left foot for gear changing and right for braking
    etc?

  5. Yep can do, Its not so much moving them about, i can walk ok and ride a
bicycle, its just the muscles in my thighs are tight so cannot lift them
very high, Id be fine on a bike if it wasnt for that.

  6. I've cross-posted this to a UK newsgroup specifically for bikers with
disabilities so you may get more help from them.

Are your legs strong enough to keep the bike upright if it starts to
tip over? Bikes can be quite heavy!

Cruisers do tend to have low seats, but sometimes have a higher seat
back fitted that could be difficult for you.

Could you manage a step-through type? Not usually considered cool, but
they have two wheels and a motor, and that's what counts.

Whether the stand is strong enough for you to stand on the footrest
while mounting the bike rather depends on the make of bike, and your
own weight. I'm sure you could find somewhere to strengthen the stand
    for you if necessary.

    Good luck

Wouldn't a scooter be a better bet? You'd only have to lift your leg
enough to clear the footboard (or whatever it's called), & parts supply
& reliability would be somewhat better than the cheap Hongdus &
    suchlike.

  9. Im fine with the continuous use thing as i say its not the use that
matters its just lifting my leg over the bike thats important, im pretty
sure all else would be ok. I drive a car which is using the feet all the
time with no trouble. I wouldnt expect to ever want to move above a 125.
But no doubt if i get that far the urge for bigger and better will arise!

Probably, though personally, (and Im fairly sure im an odd one out on UKRM)
I don't have an actual hankering over bigger and bigger bikes really.
I have my Lambretta scooter (currently requiring some repair) and a Vespa
scooter. The latter will happily do 60-65 as a 125 (standard) If i get the
cash I may put a kit in this to make it capable of about 80 but maybe not.
My passion is really the lambretta, which ive uprated to a 186cc and will do
70-75 which on a 44 year old scooter is either really good or possibly
    suicidal :)

So, ask yourself why in the first place you actually want to do this?
I may one day get a "proper" bike, but i may never bother

Depends on what you like scooter wise, I dont think i would ever want a
silverwing or one of them maxi scoots but a classic scooter such as a
    lambretta, i luv em.
Mind you probably no good to you as theres a foot pedal for the rear brake.

Look you scooter riding poof, if the geezer fancies the kudos and public
