Disable gas tank cap lock

Discussion in 'Motorbike Technical Discussion' started by Morten Becker-Eriksen, Apr 19, 2005.

  1. Any one here who can advise on how to disable the tank cap lock on a
VTR1000F. I asume it's more or less the same on most Hondas the last 10
years. I had to change ignition lock last year. I've found my self in the
position that I forget the key for the gas tank a couple of times and want
to avoid that. Rather than puting on a race tank cap I'd prefer the original
look and the look of a fuctional lock.

I like this idea best. It's simplicity. I have a similar situation with my
beemer bags. I bought used bags and rekeyed it to fit my bike. I didn't
use new pins where longer ones were needed, I just filed down the ones that
were too long. I traded to an 04 1150R and took my bags with. My new key
works on the bags as will a lot of other beemer keys I suspect

  3. Or have the new ignition lock rekeyed to match the gas cap. It might be
    easier to remove and reinstall.

  4. That was what I wanted to do. But before I start ripping away seals to find
out how to disassemble the thing I thought I should ask how to correctly
    disassemble the cap.

  5. I don't think you'd have to remove the pins. One trick that works
is to pull the cylinder, put the new key in the lock, then file
or grind down any pins that stick out.

This leaves you with some of the pins still doing their job (sorta)
and a lock that's easier to pick but won't work for every key.
