I would be very surprised it the plod give a toss, particularly as it
was on private land, they seem highly selective about what constitutes
a crime worth investigating these days, despite the loss and aggro to
you. it was good of the biker to come to your aid, I recon that's as
much as you are going to get from the situation unless you can find
    another witness.

Legally I'm sure that's right but if he causes damage he has to report it
within 24 hours. He's probably on his way round to the nearest police
station as I write... if it's open... and there's anyone there who's
authorised to deal with a crime, that is.

Don't believe so. When a truck drove into my fiesta years ago nobody
was injured, the truck driver even stopped but refused to give his
name or any details, which according to the police was still a failure
to stop offence, and I got a crime number. Left the rest to the fleet
dept, but I believe it went to court.

As was the case when my car was reversed into by a pair of drunken
buffoons in a VW camper some fifteen years ago. Reported it to the
police, with details of who, where, when and where they lived and didn't
get an impression much would be done.

So I (yes, I, Mr Couldn't-punch-his-way-out-of-a-paper-bag) went round
to their house, found the front door open, wandered through and found
them in their garden, at which point we had a nice little chat.

That evening, in the pub, an exchange of cash for me to have the car
    repaired.

Next day I had a call from a dibble who said he'd also popped round to
have a chat with the chaps concerned and they'd denied all knowledge, so
he was particularly interested when I said "that's funny, because they
gave me the cash in the pub last night to pay for the damage." I
understood he paid them another visit and read the riot act.

Now, was I agreeing with you, or arguing against? I rather seem to have
    forgotten...
