AFAIK, TICBW, S/PDIF is two channel only.
have you got the latest drivers from Hauppauge/SHS-PVR.com ? And the
latest audio/video drivers from whoever manufactures the motherboard's
    chipset?

I've never had blue-screen problems with mine.

In fact, I have no problems with it at all, since upgrading it 512Mb
    of RAM.

    Have a look/ask on SHSPVR's forums

I think there are limitations on soundcards, even Motherboards
Someone will be along shortly to give the full list, or provide a link

Ah, that would probably **** it all up then properly eh?
So that would mean if there *are* such limits then it kinda corners the
market unless im willing to spend shedloads on new graphics cards etc etc

I thought S/PDIF sent a pure digital signal, which is then decoded by
the amp into however many channels it can handle.

That was my understanding from when I looked into it a few years ago.
It probably makes for a tidier installation too.

That was my assumption, much like the "digital cable" I have from my
CD player to the AV amp - the amp turns it into 5.1

Dunno. By the time I got to that point, the TV card would neither
    uninstall or re-install :-(

MCE isn't really ready yet, imo - the device support is, as you say,
too limited. There's plenty of ways of getting this functionality on
    plain old 'ordinary' XP.

    <fx: stares at feet>

What we do have, though, is some porn that's been on memepool ...
There isn't any beyond Macrovision, which is fine because the receivers
don't belong to the customers and are tricky to hack undetected-ly. The
worst you could do would be to hack into someone else's stream, in which
case you're at their mercy if they decide to have a shit and hit pause while
    you're ripping what they're watching

Pretty much the case, but it seems that not all PC audio adaptors are
created equal and there are varying degrees of difficulty in making
some of them agree to 'pass through' the 5.1 signal.

fair enough - every day's a school day.

My only involvement with S/PDIF was in two-channel pro-audio recording.

If she'll settle for just the Freeview channels, something like the
Thomson DHD4000 (ukp200 from Comet) might suffice.

    heh.

    I also liked the quote

"Video-on-demand is better than having a video-store in your living
    room and is more convenient"

    well, more expensive, certainly.

Still, the cross-platform penny doesn't drop for a surprisingly large number
    of people.

There's quite a bit of free stuff too - we did a deal with the BBC for the
last 7 days' worth of their content (minus films and sport, natch - they
wanted us to take news, but that's plain silly when you've got CNN and
News24). Not quite a PVR, but at least there's no need to remember to set
    the video.

    And we've got
