    Me neither.

Did see lots of people being caught on the Redspeed camera right outside
    Infinity in Clapham though. Harsh.

The 2009 R1 looks exactly like it does in the pictures and sounds
exactly like it does on youtube. Who knew!?

    But what is she thinking?

    "I wish I still had my R1."

"I wonder what I'd have to sell to raise the money."

    Or simply "Ayup."

    heh.

I think it looks very ordinary indeed. I'm not usually bothered by
the looks of a bike much, but I thought they might have styled this
one a bit more radically to match the significant engine changes.

Mind you, it does sound bloody great. Unlike any four I've ever heard
    before.

It looks rubbish. Sounds lovely, looks rubbish.

I was down there with some bods from the SV forums. More than one said
"wow, have you seen the brakes? Are they six-pots?"

I explained that a few years ago, all the top-end bikes had 6-pots. Then
it was decided that 4-pots were better, so all the top-end bikes came
with 4-pots. Now 6-pots seem to be coming back in fashion. And why
didn't it have wavy discs, eh? If they don't make these minor tweaks,
the mags will have nothing to talk about and there'll be no incentive
for people to trade in for a new bike every three years. It's the two-
wheeled equivalent of skirts. Hemline go up, hemline go down.

Some of them seemed almost dismayed by my cynicism.

I was encouraged by every single person I overheard there saying "if I
win it, I'll sell it straight away". Go Yamaha!

That's presumably the uneven firing intervals.
    What's the point?

Yes, which is fortunate as they stop my spectacles falling off.
    But doesn't a 2009 R1 sound similar to a 90 degree V4?
The firing intervals are the same.

You don't follow racing, do you?

    <big bank in a nutshell>

With a 'normal' four, the power pulses are evenly distributed, every
180 deg of crank revolution. It's been found that once a tyre starts
to slide, the next power pulse keeps it sliding.

With a big bang motor, the power pulses are grouped closer together
(hence the name). While this bigger bang can make the tyre slip, the
bigger gap then allows the rear wheel to turn, the contact patch to
move, and the tyre to recover, before the next power pulse.

As WSB rules mean an engine must keep its original crank layout, this
is a way of getting a big bang motor into superbike racing.

Like sex, I used to do it but it's not that interesting to watch. :)
I know about big bang engines. My Ducati already has one. And as it has
    carbs
and redundant-spark ignition I could make it an even bigger bang engine
in ten minutes by rotating one camshaft 180 degrees.

But have you never heard a V4? Doesn't that have the same firing
    intervals as a new R1?

But Yamaha are being very careful not to call it a big bang engine, choosing
to call it (if anything) a long bang. Probably all semantic bollocks, but
any idea's *why* they've chosen not to call it "big bang"?

And don't you find it odd that in some articles, the author/arsewipe[1] says
that the smaller evenly spaced bangs allow for a more predictable loss of
grip and another author/arsewipe says a big/long bang engine does the same
    thing?

    Very confusing this motorbike stuff.

[1] Spellchecker seems to think that "arsewipe" should be "recipe"
