Then surely someone who knows the road should be able to decide where
to slow down a bit to allow for those hazards.
Being able to spot a camera van doesn't make you a safer driver. It
helps you keep your licence but that's all. A copper on foot and
wearing camouflage kit would be a bit harder to spot but that doesn't
slow down the traffic does it?
I tend to drive slower on motorways when it's dark and that's because
I can't see what's behind me rather than not being able to see what's
    in front.
I thought you had a sat nav? Just check the speedo error against that
and remember what the error is.

I think you're misjudging how accurate speedo's are these days.

I'd trust what the sat nav says I'm doing and my speedo reads a
constant 2-3mph over the actual speed right through from 30mph to over
    100mph.
You're asking to be zapped if you rely on speedo error and an optional
10% +2 to save your licence.

  7. IMHO, there's still as great a variance as ever there was, in that a few
are particularly accurate and most aren't.

What amuses me is that, if I set my cruise control to 80mph, the km/h
display varies between 128 and 132km/h.

I know several people who have checked them recently and they don't
seem to be any worse than mine. I wouldn't expect 10% from any car
made in the last 3 years.

I suppose I'm slightly paranoid because even a 4 week ban would cause
me a massive problem but I only speed to a big level on the bike and
if I get chased they'd better be fucking good because I'm off if I've
    been into ban territory.

Some of the speedos I've seen which have seemed remarkably accurate have
been the ones you'd least expect.

Years ago, my Guzzi Spada was uncannily accurate. I remember cruising it
at a steady indicated 80 and being nicked by a French speed trap, whose
coppers said they'd clocked it at 130kph.

My old power-valve RD350 was pretty good, and I remember tests of the
day remarking on how accurate it was.

I've yet to come across a BMW speedo that's done anything except lie
    outrageously.

Tests on things ike the 'Busa and ZX10R have generally flagged up 8-10%
error, but of course that gets serious when you have the things WFO.

On the forthcoming French Run it would be interesting to have a few
gaggles of bikes with at least one equipped with a GPS, just to do a few
group tests at (say) a steady 80, 90 and 100mph. Might be worth throwing
the results into Adie's soon-to-be-revamped FAQs as well.
My feeling as well. Trouble is, the bikes I own are fast enough to get
me into 'ban territory' but not fast enough to allow me to do a decent
    runner.

  11. No, there's a specific situation which will trigger suspicions and a
couple of others which will confirm them.

    Any way, you're already smart.

  13. Obviously. Same as I'm in no way going to speed in a few minutes when
I finish this coffee and get the bike out.
Oh yes. I knew before I set off they weren't 100%. It was a couple of
months after before they got sorted as well. I got a bit of a
bollocking from the garage man (old family friend) for letting them
    get into that state.
Yes. I'm not impressed. No need to identify themselves and undercover
    filming.
I'm not surprised. Civil disobedience doesn't seem to exist in a large
    scale anymore.

I'm seriously wondering whether I can stick to my plan and last the
next 5 years or so until the youngest is off to university. I'd quite
    like to head south now.

    Surely faster=safer from that POV?

Or is it just because you

    a) drive on very busy motorways
    and
    b) have good lane discipline and would have to keep pulling over to
    overtake?

    On Sun, 25 Feb 2007 12:29:45 +0000,
    My Quota's original speedo read 8% /low/ at 50 & 60mph and appeared
fairly consistent at other speeds. I broke it while trying to adjust
it. The used replacement read about 8% high at the same speeds when I
    checked it.

    too.

It's not a safety issue, it's a points on licence thing with me.
Most of my business miles are on motorways, typically the M1 or M6.
    I'll explain a bit further:

In daylight I tend to drive at around 85-90mph if the traffic allows.
I can watch my mirrors and see anything approaching from behind far
enough away to be able to slow down a bit if I've got any doubts at
all about who it might be. My experience of traffic plod is that
you'll get away with a lot more if they think you're using your powers
of observation to the maximum and nothing pisses them off more than a
driver not even noticing them sitting on his arse for a couple of
    miles.

In the dark all headlights in my mirrors look alike so I reduce my
speed to a level where I'm unlikely to get a ticket and that means
    about 80mph.

On the bike my daylight speed will be around 100mph if it doesn't
involve filtering or about 80mph if I'm filtering. In the dark it's
down to about 80mph all the time unless I'm 100% certain there aren't
    any plod behind me.

A roads are a different game altogether and I'll go as fast as road
conditions and my gut feeling allow me to. I've still got a clean
licence so obviously it's working for me.
