Beav () gurgled happily, sounding much like
    they were saying :
Nope, they just got shot of it. Just the normal VAT since then.

  2. Oh, good old pink diesel. "35 second gasoil". I've known people adding
bleach to it to avoid detection. It is after all, exactly the same as
the stuff from Sainsbury's or wherever. Apart from the pink dye. I
believe those C&E guys at the side of the road "testing" fuel, just look
    at it. "It's pink - you're nicked".

Chelters is LibDem. They want your children to fall down the enormous
potholes in the road, which they can't see through the clouds of
    fagsmoke.

Most of them haven't down here, but my guess is that we'll see the jump
as soon as the next delivery arrives.

Yeah, and they used to target "White Van Man" until diesel engines became
popular in cars and now anything is fair game, so what used to be a pretty
safe bet (not getting tested at the roadside) has now become a bigger
    gamble.

Mind ewe, the fine for getting caught isn't anything like the money that can
be saved over a relatively short time so it's still common for people to use
"cherry" instead of the usual stuff.

They do regular dip-testing round here (lots of farmers) and the
penalties are *huge*. As it's a tax issue, rather than a vehicle one,
it's enforced by HMC&E, whose powers are virtually limitless.

Use of recycled chip-fat is receiving the same attention, too, as it's
    becoming /very popular/.

But the limits are never reached. Even a truck operator I know uses cherry
and he's been caught at least three times to my certain knowledge and he
STILL uses it, so as I said, the cost of the fines isn't enough to deter
    everyone.
You can pay a small levy to use it though (fuel tax, they call it) and it's
not even close to the cost of buying normal diesel either.

I investigated that a while ago, but the complete circus you had to go
through to register, keep records and pay the duty due didn't seem worth it
in the end. Which, I guess, was the purpose of the exercise from HMC&E
    point of view.

There was a feature on R4 about this last week. They said that the duty
had been scrapped if you use less than 1500ltr/year IIRC because the
cost of collecting it outweighed to revenue gained.

  12. They take a sample for testing. It's not just a dye, but a chemical
marker which cannot be removed by the usual method of filtering through
    Fullers' Earth.

I was pulled a couple of years ago at a roadside C&E check. On dipping
the tank they found biodiesel and vegoil which was actually ok - only
slight problemette was that I'd been adding ATF which has a red dye in
    it. Oops.

    Anyway, nothing came of it.

As long as you pay the appropriate duty. When you put it in your tank, it
becomes a fuel and is susceptible to fuel duty.

  17. We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
drugs began to take hold. I remember NickNoxx

That certainly was the case, but the EU put pressure, nay a dictat, on
countries to have some percentage of biofuels by 2000 and whatever, so
the Brit Gov (and the Irish Gov) decided to make it easier to use vegoil
and biodiesel so it could count towards the figures. To this end the C&E
regs were changed so that all you had to do was nip down your local C&E
office, make a simple declaration, pay a laughable duty and feck off
about your business. However, as noted below it's changed again.
Good stuff. I see small producers still have remain on the books, just
not bother submitting returns, which ties in with what I said above -
they'll all be tagged as 2,500 litre producers, makes it all very neat.
