Fair point, well made - bit of a mistake trying to apply logic to a
    female action.

    .... is the correct answer.

The most serious injury I've picked up in the last 20 years[1] was
caused by the sleeve zip on an armoured jacket.

Even then, the scab was gone in three weeks.

[1] If I discount the dented shin I picked up in Scotland, but I
    didn't actually fall off, then.

  9. I apply the same logic to wearing a seat belt in a car which I only use
    if I remember.
Correct. I use more "appropriate" gear in winter; not because the risk
of crashing is greater but because it's warmer.

I was kinda guessing. I remember the 750 doing 140 miles to reserve
when cruising which is about 35/38ish. When thrashing it, it would
hit reserve on 100 or under. So it was a bit of a guess.

Basing the comparison on the respective performance and pricing of a
normal car then I'd suggest Suzuki GS500, Kawasaki ER-5 (or even W650),
Honda CBF 500 or 250 maybe a Moto Guzzi Breva.

I'd guess that total expenditure would still be less although not a great
deal); if you factor in depreciation the saving would be a great deal
    more.

How you'd measure time saved by using the motorbike, especially in towns
    and cities, I don't know.

I'd probably rule out most of the above to be honest, having ridden a
CB500 for a week and found it to be an OK-ish sort of a bike, for
anything more than a few miles a day I'd find one a complete pain in the
    arse due to the size.
Depreciation on a bike that gets any sort of 'normal' use is horrific.
My £3.5k worth of Divvy 6 was worth £1.5k after 2 years and 60k miles.
(OK, that's a bit more than 'normal' use, but you get the idea)
Almost always cancelled out by the time it takes to get kitted up.

  15. That'll be me, then. Not a riding god, but someone who, as Matt says,
has assessed the risks, assessed his own personal crunch record,
assessed the hassle and discomfort of full leathers on many riding days,
    and made a calculated decision.

  18. Yebbut, we're talking here about a SOB, aren't we, running on skinny
tyres.... and a classic of its kind, so sod-all depreciation.

Not quite like my Benly, but not too far removed.

So the answer is "yes". ;-))

  19. With the exception of classics, and some basic bigger bikes, I'd agree.

  20. Do you live in a seriously bad area then Steve? OK, I've been riding a
bit longer than you (since 1978 on the road) but the Pan is cheaper
than the car to insure, and they are both unlimited mileage policies.
Hmmm... Ring round next time you need tyres - You can get a pair for
    around 200 easily.

In fact http://www.fwr.co.uk/ will do a pack of three for the VFR for
    189.
The VFR is meant to have a minor at 4k intervals - just oil and filters?
