It was a DOG, and I got rid of it to cut my losses. WE DO NOT SPEAK
    ABOUT THE CAR.
Just random ones off of ebay that look quite good. I'm going to have
to re-think a few things when I've been on some larger bikes.

My Triple (sans loss of no claims ATM) is about the same price as the 75
that I use for business in the inasurance stakes.
Hmmm, not than the 75, but I'm not likley to stick to the schedule.

    I get 150 to a tank. £10. The 75 gets me 250 if I'm lukcy at £30
I'll admit though, the 75 is not exaclty typical

    Context, Context.

The bike examples you gave were for a modern sports bike but you didn't
put it up against a comparable sports car. GSXR is, what, a Lotus?

If you want to commute a mid weight UJM is going to be **** all to run
and servicing is very easy home stuff. Tyres are cheap too: £50 a *pair*

I use the mantra "I won't ride a motorbike without proper protective
gear" as my daily paranoid reminder.

I never cease to be amazed by those riding gods with only jeans and
trainers on, although they generally do wear a leather jacket.

This is probably a ginge but "How To Dump Your Girlfriend / Part 1 and
    2" is a bit a of a reminder.

You mean a mid-weight like a Bandit 6 say? Running costs wouldn't be
far off from my GSXR750. The service intervals and costs are the
same, for a new rider insurance will be extortionate as it is for
everything and tyres wouldn't be too far off. Admittedly it wouldn't
eat them in the same way.

Thing is, people don't compare an average car to an average bike, they
compare them on purchase cost. Someone sees that the cost of their
Mondeo gets them a 1000cc bike and assumes it must be cheaper to run
because it's got a smaller engine.

I stand by my premise that unless you're riding a very small engined
bike it will cost the same or more to run as an average car.

What sort of new bikes can be compared with a 'normal' car, though?

Divvy 600 probably, but not much else. Even a Divvy 6 costs vastly more
to run than a 'normal' hatch.

True I guess, although the 75 cost rather less than the Triple :)

    Donald says...
It has nothing to do with being a riding god, more to do with an
assessment of the risks, rather than a blind reliance on protective
    gear.

I usually wear jeans and trainers, sometimes I wear boots, very
occasionally I'll wear leathers. This is because I'm well aware of
the risks and make that choice.

Wearing protective gear does not mean that you will not be injured,
not wearing protective gear does not mean that you will be injured.

Proper protective gear only protects against _some_ potential injuries
and even then only if it fits properly. You might be better off
feeling slightly vulnerable in jeans and a paddock jacket than feeling
    invulnerable in full leathers.

I don't actually believe the above - I just thought I'd say it.

When I had my accident in September, I was wearin a linen shirt, Rohan
walking trousers and a pair of Ecco slip-ons. This didn't cause me to
crash. It was the blind cow in the Volvo that ran into me that caused me to
crash. I had a few scabs that I might not have had if I'd been fully
armoured, but that's a consequence I can live with.

Quite. Had I not been wearing boots when I hit the armco, my foot
would have been very fucked indeed. I was wearing jeans and trainers
when I crashed while filtering and I was uninjured. I've crashed in
various bits of protective equipment at a variety of speeds.
Sometimes I would have benefited from better protection, sometimes
    not.

    It's simply a personal choice.
