    Someone nicks a car , finds a mobile in there , then uses his *own* phone to
    ring people up and brag about having stolen their mates car.
    To further compound the stupidity he then uses his girlfriends mobile to
    text abuse to some of the people who have left him answerphone messages.

    About as smart as these chaps.

    They nick a car, and smile and wave at a gatso as they trigger it.

    You know the abstract reminds me of someone.....[1]

    esp: " participants scoring in the bottom quartile on tests of humor,
    grammar, and logic grossly overestimated their test performance and ability.
    Although their test scores put them in the 12th percentile, they estimated
    themselves to be in the 62nd "

    It would also help to explain why so many people think their driving is
    "above average" when the reverse is more often the case.

    You think more people are below average than are above average?

    What I think is irrelevant, what they think of themselves is the point.

    Yes. Very good drivers are few and far between and they are so far ahead
    of the pack that they keep the average up. The majority just muddle
    along, some more successfully than others. Then, of course, there are
    the few who are so dangerously incompetent they should never be allowed
    anywhere near a public road.

    IME, people's perception of their own ability is usually inversely
    proportional to their actual ability.

  13. In uk.rec.motorcycles, PC Paul amazed us all with this pearl of wisdom:
    What's average got to do with intelligence?
    Try using the other one.

    : Depends on how the data are distributed, really. Most biological data
    : like this are usually a Gaussian distribution; a bell curve in other
    : words. That is symmetrical, so half of people are above average, half
    : below.

    That's making a hell of a big assumption about the measure used, is it
    not?

    Hang on! I've got it!

    (((M+C+F)/10)-(B/4)-(A+T))/Y)+W

    Where:

    M = Estimated miles covered in your entire driving career.
    C = Number of non-fault accidents
    F = Fastest you've ever driven (in MPH)
    B = Number of at-fault minor accidents
    A = Number of at-fault major accidents
    T = Number of failed driving tests
    Y = Years driving
    W = Number of International motorsport titles run.

    That seems perfectly fair to me.

    I'm 2.213'

    Which is nice.

    Your brackets don't match up. You need a fourth open bracket at the start.
    I seem to be 1765.34
    Which is... a lot. Is that good?

    I come out at 5353, Nyaar.

    Although I admit I had to lie about my total mileages and completely
    change your formula to achieve this result.

    If brackets are the biggest problem you can see then ...

    <Shrugs>

    I dunno, it does seem like a lot, so that *must* be good.
