not quite what I meant by "very cheap", but not a bad looking property.

TBH, I'd really like to buy somewhere in Spain, but 'er nibs isn't
convinced - she'd much rather sink every last available bit of mortgage
    into getting a slightly bigger/better located property about a 1/4 of a
mile from where we currently live.

Hmmm, what would one get as rental income for a place
like that? Any university or hospital nearby?

I was thinking exactly the same thing. I could buy somewhere like that
for cash[1] this afternoon, but I don't know what I'd *do* with it.

[1] well, write a cheque against my mortgage reserve account.

Well, it looks handy for Alton Towers.

Middle of nowhere, that's the problem. It's in a *tiny* village about 10
    miles from the nearest town.
A similar thought crossed my mind, until I saw the location, not renting
teritory so wouldn't contribute to paying off my mortgage any quicker.

Sure, I'd prefer Italy, but you don't get as much for your Euro. People
keep telling me "buy a property in Croatia - they're really cheap!". I
was in Split before the war - it was shit then - I can't imagine 10
years of fighting have improved the surrounding countryside and
    infrastructure.
Well, the above is the currently prevaling theory - she'll change her
mind in a couple of months. A couple of months ago, the big plan was
for her mum to sell her flat, and buy a small house instead, with us
making up the difference in cost. I did point out how much "fun" that
would be when the old girl croaks, and the property has to be split up
    between the grandchildren...

Find 1/4 acre of wasteland, clear it, and sell parking spaces.

I really liked Hungary when I went with Veggie Dave. Extremely cheap,
and no hassles with buying as they're in the EU (which may mean that
    prices will rise)

Nice country, stunning women, but the language is almost completely
    unrelated to any other languages.
Get her that little cottage that Ginge posted a link to. Problem
    solved.

any greenfield sites around here are protected, and brownfield needs
specialist knowledge and handling. In any case, almost everything
around where we are has had "luxury appartments" built on it.

"the value of your investment may go down as well as up".
Isn't Hungarian vaguely related to Finnish, and both of them originally
came out of India? Or have I just made all that up.

They're both in the Finno-Ugric group, along with Estonian, Karelian and
Saami. I think they came out of central asia rather than India - the
Finno-Ugric group is a major branch of the Uralic family, which I guess
comes from the Urals, or something

It's good to know my memory isn't totally fucked.

Back in the 80s, my dad used to do a lot of work[0] with the Finns[1] -
they appear to be completely barking.

[0] he was marketing director for a firm which made - amongst other
    things - arctic-grade thermal socks.
[1] and the Russians - I've recently converted a VHS tape to DVD
featuring my dad in an honourary Red Army uniform lying on the ground
in Siberia, firing a big belt-fed machine gun thing at Reindeer -
subsequent footage includes the BBQing and eating of said Reindeer by
my dad and an obviously completely pissed Red Army Colonel. Tales of
vodka and fatty meat for every meal of the day including brekfast etc.

I nearly added "except Finnish, and the other nonsense shite from up
    that way".

I got quite good at Finnish when I was working there, and I learned a
little bit of Hungarian when I was knocking about with a hungry girl
    in 1997.

And I can get by in Franch and Italian. Yet I consider myself no good
at languages. Perhaps I should try harder.

looked fun, but very very cold. At the time, in the mid/late 80s, it
was mildly worrying to see that an army who had fairly easy access to
nuclear weapons, were drunk all the time.
    never will, probably.
