    That doesn't affect the principle.

I've always wondered how that works in relation to tax years, obviously
you can only spend a limited number of days a year in the country to be
exempt, but do they have to fall in the same tax year or can it just be
    a year of elapsed time?

That's right, but it's pretty generous, because the arrival day and
the departure day don't count as days. So if you fly in on a
Saturday, stay the night and leave on Sunday morning, you haven't used
any days. This is what the super-rich do.
    Tax year, I think.

  8. So that's a yes then.

Are you sure that you are not a politician?

No, that's not a yes. Did you not see the stress marks around one of
the words in my reply? They may help you understand my point.
    I'm sure.

But but but... isn't it obvious?? HOW I could stretch to possibly
understanding [1]... but not the when.

When would you use it otherwise?!

[1] the two potential urban legends from SA :
    i) department of health sending out free condoms *stapled* to letters
explaining how they were a good idea.
ii) story of a township nurse demonstrating how to use the condoms by
rolling it on to the handle of a broom. Cue much anger when person gets
pregnant later on due to condoms always being rolled on to the broom before
    sex.

Shirly it'd keep people in the Dole office longer, waiting for the paperwork
to be gathered, signed for, completed, copied, filed, buried, turned to
    peat...

Oh, and one thing I wasn't aware of a few years ago, is that when you move
into the 40% tax bracket, its only the part of your pay that is over the 40%
salary limit is taxed at 40%. You may call me a TC now but no one ever told
    me that at school :)

  12. I understand your point perfectly - I was trying to say that you hadn't
    actually answered my question.

Hence the question about politician status.

Did it never occur to you then, that nobody would ever take that pay
rise that put them over the limit, otherwise it would be an effective
10% pay cut? Yes, you are indeed a TC.

Not really; he's just not playing the 'literal' game. Your
hero/demi-god/semi-divine human or however you'd care to refer to him
is pretty much known for helping other people, which is pretty much a
definition of Philanthropy ("1 : goodwill to fellowmen; especially :
active effort to promote human welfare"). So it'sa fair to assume that
his followers would try to act in a similar way. Arguing otherwise is
foolish; quoting scriptures to support said arguments even more so.

whilst frag is being dim here, to be ever so slightly fair to him, it
should be pointed out that not all UK taxation classification is
marginal. The worst absolute tax banding is Stamp Duty i.e.

0% of total if price is less than 60000 pounds
1% of total if price is between 60000 and 250000 pounds
3% of total if price is between 250000 and 500000 pounds
4% of total if price is over 500000 pounds

of course, this is why you see a lot of properties at 249,950 and
499,950 respectively, and very few at 260K and 510K.

Is it actually possible to buy a reasonable, inhabitable
property for < 60,000 pounds these days?

I know I could check on rightmove and I am really not trying
to start yet another 'North/South divide' flame war.

Well it was never a point in question until I got my third IT job.

At that point I sort of went "Oh, what about this 40% thingy? I'll be better off
not taking the pay rise... uh? That *can't* be right! I've got to go through 3
or so years pay rises to get back to where I am now?"

Upon when I queried the interweb thing and found out.
