Desparately seeking my old bike!

    Hi all,

I had a flash of inspiration tonight as I'd been racking my brain trying to
remember the Reg number of my first big bike I bought on passing my test in
1987 - a VF1000FF in Blue and Silver. I was her first owner and regretted
    selling her...

Anyway - that reg number - I put it into the DVLA lookup page and it looks
like she may still be in existence!!

    The enquiry is complete
The vehicle details for D754 YJH are:

    Date of Liability 01 12 2005
    Date of First Registration 03 04 1987
    Date of Last V5 Issue 17 12 2004
    Year of Manufacture 1987
    Cylinder Capacity (cc) 998CC
    CO2 Emissions Not Available
    Fuel Type Petrol
    Export Marker Not Applicable
    Vehicle Status Unlicensed
    Vehicle Colour BLUE

Soo - anyone seen it? Is there a way I can contact the current registered
keeper via DVLA, or other route?

Beer tokens to suitably solid leads - I really hope she's still 'alive'...

    Legit? Probably not.

However - if you write to the DVLA saying that you have a valid reason to
get in touch with the owner (like - you had an RTA with them and they drove
off or they witnessed an RTA or similar) they will send you their contact
    details.

This process was being complained about (for fairly good reasons if you ask
me!) in MCN a few weeks/months ago. The idea being that a bike thief can get
the reg details, etc and find out the home address of the owner. You can
then write to the DVLA requesting a copy of the log book because you are the
new owner. If the DVLA don't get a reply denying the change of ownership
within a couple of weeks or so from the registered owner then you get the
log book. A thieving scrote can then go and steal said bike, have a copy of
the log book, and the genuine owner has a hell of a job getting their bike
    back.
Beer tokens accepted if this suggestion works!)

Oddly enough any actual evidence of this apparently common scenario has
yet to be seen here in ukrm. I wish it were, I would certainly
volunteer both me and a camera for when the rightful owner went knocking
for his bike back, so to speak.

For the privacity-aware, in Spain you hand 12 euros on to the Direccion
General de Trafico and they will give you all the details about the
owner of a given license plate.

    Nice, innit?
