DePelchin Poker Run debriefing

  1. hmm, debriefing...
could that be taken as removing one's briefs? whatever..

the weather was perfect for riding, mostly sunny with a few puffy white
    clouds, low 80s
    good turnout for the ride
i was late getting there because halloween was the night before (and
that should be all the explanation necessary) but was in plenty of time
to get in the ride and was not the last to show up and register. the
card handlers at the first stop said the same thing, while quaffing cold
liquid bread "yah, this halloween the nite before a rally is hard on ya,
har har" mutual sympathies exchanged and off again

the route was excellent, a little over a hundred miles of twists, hills
and dales, many at the same time. nothing like a string of signs posting
15 mph corners followed by 25 mph twists with good elevation changes and
views, fall colors just starting to show. FM 3090 has to be one of the
best south central Texas bike roads. two of the card stops were bike
friendly bar and grills which probably made great rest stops for the
cruiser riders, Yankee's Tavern and Henry's House of Horns. Yankee's, a
card stop, and Texas Thunder Saloon, the start and finish, both feature
bike only paved parking areas too, a nice touch. i tend to business and
get back to riding pretty quickly myself when on rallys, a habit from
the LDR rally world, but they were noted for future reference when back
in the area with more laid back riders and time on my hands. Had the
pleasure of meeting Ed Stimach, who posted the run notice in
tx.motorcycles, at one of the card stops too. we had a good conversation
about distance touring, he's planning to make a grand canyon run and we
talked about that and other touring items for a bit. i'll leave it to
him to post full details of how the benefit made out for DePelchin, but
at the time i had to leave, the awards were being handed out and the
turnout looked pretty good. too bad my poker hands were pathetic, but
i'll gladly lose at poker any day of the week if it helps out needy kids.

again, DePelchin is a very worthy cause, the houston star riders put on
a very good poker run in their first effort at such and should they do
it again next year, and they'd bloody well better, i'll ride it and if
you're in the area, you should too. time to put the briefs back on...

Thanks for the kind words and for your participation in our event.

The Star Riders of Houston 1st Annual DePelchin Poker Run was a
success. Even with the low turn-out normally expected with a rain
date, we raised $1580.00 for the DePelchin kids!

Texas Thunder Ice House and their BBQ team were a fantastic host for
    the event.

Star Rider members solicited great auction items - this is where we
raised the bulk of the money. This will be a tremendous help when we
help provide a great Christmas for the kids on our DePelchin Toy Run
