Definitive filtering incident

On my way back from site this evening a definitive filtering incident
happened just too far ahead for me to be a useful witness.

A murky evening, slightly foggy, wet road. Line of stop-start/slow
moving traffic. As I sit in the old pug I see in my wing mirror a
largish bike approaching. Not fast, but I have to say faster than I
would be just there because a little further on is a side turning on the
left that serves a housing estate and a busy petrol station. I was well
over to the left as per usual and so it had no problem passing me. I do
remember thinking 'what was that, L reg ?, watch yourself'.

The line of traffic came to a halt for a while and then proceeded very
slowly. Eventually we came upon an SUV, that had obviously been coming
out of the side turning through a gap in the line, with said bike wedged
under the nose. Rider was sitting up on the opposite pavement and plenty
of people were already looking after him so I thought it better not to
stop and clog up the road with another parked car.

Probably the classic scenario of SUV driver only looking to see if
anything was coming the other way while creeping out and then flooring
it when a gap opened up. If I had actually seen the collision I
naturally would have stopped to be a witness.

So I don't want to sound like a safety Nazi but bear in mind that a
manoeuvre you have done many times on a bright sunny evening can become
significantly dodgier on a murky one.

why do you think SUV drivers are worse than drivers of any other sort
    of 4-wheeler?

Don't know, but it was an SUV that did me in.

Having said that, I drive one as my works truck.

    Did I say that?

If I had clocked what model it was I would have said "classic scenario
of [CRV, Cayenne, Shogun.....]" If only the make it would have been
"scenario of [Honda, Porsche, Mitsubishi...]". The only thing I could
quickly distinguish was that it was an SUV (oh and it was black). Sloppy
writing on my part (as per usual). An implied 'the' rather than 'a'
which I should have included for clarity. In any future posting I will
just say 'the car' so as to avoid any sensibilities. In the murk I had
no more idea what make/model car it was than I did the bike.

I did actually drive a Honda CRV [1]for a couple of years so I am not
    totally agin them.

You're very close. It was a minor incident, really ... just a little
sort of wedgie thing - which #1 immediately replicated on #2.

Well, I thought it was funny - twice. Elly, perhaps surprisingly, was
of a different opinion both times.

I had an interesting conversation with my nephew at the weekend. I
announced I was going to poo in his head after he said he was going to
wee in my face. The conversation went on for quite some time and took
    some imagination towards the end.

That's the beauty of talking to a four year old, you get a much more fun
    conversation.

you implied it by saying "SUV" rather than "car".

You inferred it. Whether I implied it or not is up to me to decide is it
    not?

From the distance I first saw said vehicle the only thing I could
discern was that it was that particular form of car often referred to as
an SUV so i described it thus.

OK, OK you win. Having driven one for two years I am conscious of the
fact that despite my best intentions I was starting to develop a
slightly different approach to other road users. A nasty trait which
hopefully can not be ascribed generally to all or even most SUV drivers,
    but I do wonder.

And a classic case of the biker not paying full attention either.
Sounds like a 50/50 to me with, if anything, the biker being more at
    fault.
