I know the feeling, I have the annoying ability to turn almost any
    conversation to motorbikes.
Have you seen the superbike school on-bike lap?
    Brings back some good memories:
    www.superbikeschool.com.au/media/lapcam01.mov
It's a 2:00ish lap so it's pretty relevant to the speeds an amateur
    can do.
Speaking of riding in Norway, have you ever ridden trollstigen? (sp?)
I was riding from Trondheim to Oslo and went way out of my way to ride
it but it was closed. I snuck past all the barriers but turned around
when I came across some workmen. I was gonna sneak passed but then I
noticed rocks about the size of my head falling down across the road.
I quickly realised what all the 'no stopping' signs were all about.

A pic for those who haven't seen it:
This was on my third session of my second day. I was getting very
frustrated being stuck behind a big group of ducati 99xs who were
doing consistent 2:03s. They rode in a bunch and had more drive out
of the corners than I did (after going through slower than I wanted).
They finaly spread out so I could pick them off one by one. I was so
excited to get past the last one that I went a little nuts.
On all previous laps I had a smidge of tail slide coming out of
siberia, I'd have very high revs in 2nd gear (approx 110+ kph) and
just before shifting up the back would step out. I kept backing off
but for some stupid reason on this lap I thought I'd keep it on...
I don't know how big or long the slide was but I still had my knee
down on the back straight and the bike was at 90 degrees to the track.
The transition from knee down to 120 kph bum slide was so gentle I
felt like I was sitting watching a movie. When the side of my bike
burst into flame I started to get a little concerned. Amazingly the
bike didn't turn or flip one little bit and the damage was almost
exclusive to the magnesium alternator cover, side fairing and rear
axle. If it wasn't for a few drops of oil leaking out the cover they
would've let me back on the track.

    The aftermath:

    <http://au.f1.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/gigagilgamesh_au/detail?.dir=/Unfiled+Photos&.dnm=ScorchB.jpg>
Notice all the white around the fairing, that's pretty much the extent
of the burning and the sparking.

Me posing with my minor injury from the jacket riding up my arm:

    <http://au.f1.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph...ail?.dir=/Unfiled+Photos&.dnm=IdiotGrinB.jpg>
I was quite popular that day, everyone wanted to see the aftermath of
the 'burning bike'. It was incredible how lucky the bike was to come
    off so well.
The rear axle nut had ground down past the split pin, yet the rear
    fairing was bairly scratched.
That would be cool. I'll see how I go with the track school and I
might want to book some track days next year.
To be honest track days kinda scare the crap out of me :) I always
end up pushing pretty hard, and even with a 600 there is so much
trouble you can get yourself into.

  5. So faken learn... grab a spanner and start someplace... bolt goes loose,
bolt goes tight, bolt goes loose, bolt goes tight... there's only that one
degree of freedom there. How much scope for **** up do you think that
    provides... sheesh...

....if Erik the Red had had your attitude, it would've been Columbus who was
really to blame for discovering America.

Haven't we been over this before?

(I'm getting more and more glad I don't live in Melbourne and hang out with
all youse cahns on a daily basis, 'cause all I'd be doing in the evenings is
doing gratis spanner work because, on principle, I couldn't let you take
your bikes to a bikeshop to do it...)

<chuckle> If I thought sleep was going to improve my attractiveness I'd be lying
abed for many more hours. It didn't work at 16 so I doubt it's going to work now
    :)

(I do enough work at midnight without screwing up my toys in the garage through
    lack of sleep thanks)

    ...snip
Errm plenty actually - we have the following options just off the top:
    - Rounding off nuts due to the use of a shifting spanner
    - Overtorqueing it and getting that sickening "oh shit it's not tightening
anymore it's just spinning" stripped thread feeling
    - Cross threading it and forcing it down (only seen anyone do that once but it's
    possible)
    - Failure to apply appropriate washers, loctite etc in crucial places

    Any others ?
Well maybe we can come to some sort of arrangement :) I part with what's left
of my disposable income and you get a deposit towards an *04 R1 :)

    JL
*Assuming that's the latest lust factor item
(two bikes and two cars in desperate need of TLC - work pays for the Audi to be
    serviced :)

  9. Well, it's not like you're going to do any one of those more than once, now,
    are you?
We can try. Every other cahn I've ever suggested this to either just folded
and rejoined the queue at the bikeshop service counter, or went the "it's
just a little slimy. It's still good, it's still good." route and left the
    bike untouched...
    towards an *04 R1 :)

Ah-huh, so what do I do about the other 20 grand one of those is going to
    cost...?
Actually, I've kind of put all those things up alongside walking on the Moon
and scaring the shit out of (insert name of hornbag-du-jour here) by having
her come pillion... the less I think about how far away from being able to
afford a new bike the less depressed I'll become...
With 30 cylinders between them, if my count is correct... that'll be fun...

  10. That'd put a lot of bikes on the market - theres a guy doing high one
fourties round the creek on a babyblade, I hear...

    See your email.
Shit man they're not that dear ! Last I looked RRP was 18K on road or
    thereabouts.
Not on my to do list personally.
hehe now there's a dream worth hanging onto - there's a lot of very cute
hornbags out there. Don't give up :)
Come one man, how far away is the end of the PhD ? Of course you'll need to move
to the US or Europe if you want to make any money in science, but hey think
about those Italian alps or the Blue Ridge Parkway !
Naaah only 24 - 12+6+4+2 - the extra 6 are in the audi which is not my problem
other than to front it up at the appropriate times. I'm probably outsourcing the
Daimler (V12) to a mate in Briz for the same reason lack of time and not wanting
    to be screwed by mechanics.

  13. I'd say Bullshit..Honda should sign him to replace Rossi....

    Lap records..
250 Aprilia RS Aaron Gobert (NSW) 1:41.32 27/08/00
Yamaha YZF-R6 Superstock Alex Cudlin (NSW) 1:41.962 31/08/03[/QUOTE]

Errmm, let me clarify - by "high one fourties" I meant 1:48 or 1:49s,
    not 1:40.9... Sorry...

Even so, unless the baby blade in question is running a blower or has had a
CR500 motor shoehorned in (something I've thought about many times :), that's
still a time that suggests the rider in question should be looking for a
professional ride. It wasn't Gardner or Curtain shit stirring was it ? I mean 7
or 8 seconds short of Gobert's lap record on a similar weight bike with twice
    the HP*.......

    JL
ie a race RS has near twice the HP of a babyblade - even a breathed on one
