Cool. The motherboard/CPU I have for it is actually clocked at 1500
Mhz, but Windows rates it at 803
I'm not looking to run new-ish games on it, so it wouldn't be an issue.

I've got my eye on a machine or two on eBay, I was going to get one with
my bonus last year but it got spent elsewhere, Hopefully this year shall
    bear fruit.

Anyone got any other contacts for machines? I've seem a couple of places
but they want in excess of £2.5K and I can't really justify that
    much,£1200 is about my limit.

  4. There used to be a place at Tidy's yard in Ditchling, East Sussex that
did them. Try as I might I can't find any contact info for them and I've
forgotten their name (Doh) but I had two fruit machines out of there and
a Space Invaders from a place in Bolney. The fruties were £100 and the
    Space Invaders was £80.

There's quite a few Pinball tables for sale at around £1,200 on the web.

I did spend some time in arcades and playing arcade games.

HOwever that doesn't help me understand why people go to the lengths of
building the entire cabinet etc from scratch.

The bloke I know built it all from basics - ie. planks of wood etc.

He even made a special side trip whilst over here from the States to buy a
controller thing because he couldn't get one in the States.

    It's that I don't understand.

    Me neither.
I'd much rather buy an empty cab and chuck a PC inside.
Easier , and looks more authentic.

Not in this case - it's superb looking bit of kit.

Uses a TFT though rather than a 'proper' screen so maybe that's cheating a
    bit.

  9. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
drugs began to take hold. I remember Whinging Courier
Actually, I quite enjoy the occasional play of the pinball game in W2K.

Does it? Coo, look, it does 'n all.
Have to give that a go, in my copious free time.

My excuse is that I only use the computer for serious stuff.

Oh, and for games that I install myself, of course.
My little bit's quiet at the moment, but I still need to put the hours in.

  12. Yes. The old ones really are the best. You don't get the same "gotta
beat that score" feeling with the new fangled stuff.

Honestly, I've said it before but it all went to pot with 3D. They even
ruined Pac-Man by going 3D but the last proper arcade game I played like
that was Dragon's Lair and was the first of its kind being that it was
on a laser disc and was all cartoonified.

What's your best score on W2K pinball BTW?

I've not even played it on this computer yet.

Twilight Zone and The Addams Family are going for silly money nowadays.
I bought mine from Pinball Heaven 6 or 7 years ago for 650 quid fully
refurbished, and you're right, I looked at their site and they want
£2595 for one now. Fuckin' ell!
Go for a less popular Bally/Williams maybe?
But I'm sure 1200 quid should buy you a decent pinball.
Obviously you pay premium prices for refurbished/guaranteed pins from
places like Pinball Heaven etc. Keep on checking ebay.

William's Defender was the all time greatest arcade game of all time, no
question. The Atari version, was, of course, pants.

Part of my dropping out of Uni first time round can be attributed to my
ability to clock the arcade version, which took no little amount of
practice. Didn't help that there was a tabletop version in the Hall bar...

  16. That's the kiddy and those swarmers can be a bastard, too.

I really must buy a USB gamepad for this laptop. I've not played
    Defender[1] for ages.

[1] Or any other game that requires more than the arrow keys

I loved it. In my local arcade they had the sound turned *way* up.
The sound it made after pressing player start is ingrained in me and
    still gets my pulse racing.
What a game. A game thought out for playability, and it was not for
    newbies either. :)
All these buttons just feel so *right*.
