not sure if you're commenting on the RX or the Jeep's MPG, but dealing
    with each:

the Jeep had a stupidly inefficient 4l straight six, coupled to a
slush box and was pretty damn heavy - getting 14mpg out of it was
    pretty good considering.

The RX technically only has a 1.3 litre engine, but it's squeezing 231
bhp out of that, and redlines at 10K rpm, so it's not entirely
surprising it's not the most economical car in the world. And don't
ask about the oil consumption (though mine's not nearly as bad as some
    - it seems to vary on who put the thing together in the factory, and
if it's had the rotor seal mod done (mine has)).

it averages out - other than fuel and lubricant, the RX has cost maybe
£750 in running costs in 4 years of ownership.

Of course, don't mention the £2K insurance costs and ~£10K of
depreciation in that time: la la la la I'm not listening.

The RX has a pretty small tank, which is why I was fairly shocked at
the fuelling cost - bear in mind that that 73 quid will take me about
    270 miles.

I don't think I've *ever* measured bike fuel consumption.

    No it isn't, it's 2.6L.

    No wait it's 3.9L....

only for taxation purposes (you're right insofar as 2.6 is the
    capacity listed on the V5)
only for artificial engine power output comparison purposes:

It has two ~654cc displacement rotors - so it really is a 1.3, though
comparing it to the capacity of reciprocating piston engines is
    meaningless.

I used to calculate it in my head every time I filled up. Just out of
    interest, like.

    For leisure use, certainly not.

For day to day commuting, certainly, it enables me to budget.

I've paid some attention to expected consumption for September's road
trip, but once I worked out it was going to cost a fortune I pretty much
switched off. It'll cost what it'll cost, and I'd rather do the trip in
the car I've got than something more frugal, so **** it.

Sure - I can see that it's sensible to work out an approximate cost if
you're doing big mileage in a short space of time like on your trip,
especially when it's going to be several hundred quid.

    <fx:thinks>

Hmm..."sensible" in relation to ogden. Now that doesn't happen often...

I just didn't want to know how much the fuel cost me to get to Malta
and back. In fact, I still haven't looked at my Barclaycard statements
and added the cost of the trip up, and probably never will.

Ultimately I figured whatever it costs in fuel, it'll cost more in
speeding fines, so there's no point trying to do the maths with anything
    but hindsight.

I need to get some new rear tyres first too - the ones on the back
wheels at the moment are about five years old and are slowly turning to
teflon. Oversteer central - amusing on the M25/A21 junction but won't be
quite so fun on the Timmelsjoch.

If my sums are right, and they're probably not, my combined fuel bill
for Brno and Misano will be about 1200 quid.

**** it, it's only money and it's all in a good cause.

AOL, I get a reliably consistant 650 miles between the little red light
telling me that there is about 60 miles worth left.
You do NOT want a diesel to run out of fuel, bleeding the system is a pig.

I kept an Excel spreadsheet last summer.
70 days, 11,405 miles, 7769.91 Euros including everything except
airfare. Fuel was 1427.81 Euros, other bike expenses were 1611.55
    Euros.

I've run my 60 plate Fiesta van dry twice, just refill with fuel, turn
the key for 10 seconds and it fires up.

  18. But we are talking about petrol usage not oil. : )

mine had one of those silly "real time fuel usage" indicators - I
could get it down to *zero* mpg, flat-foot accelerating up a hill.

I have one of those on my Fiesta van, a 60 plate 1.4 TD. I have had
    that reading 7mpg.
