I can just about get 22-24mpg out of the RX - pretty crap, but not as
bad as the old Jeep's 14mpg average.

The SO Scenic is currently being driven very carefully, and is up to
65mpg average for the last several weeks. Not bad. Of course if you
factor in the repair cost of injector pump, injector refurbish yada yada
then it equates to an overall 1.5mpg. Probably.

About half an hour ago I put 30 quid in the BMW, the gauge rose a 1/4
    up the scale

I think it's a pretty good way of detecting whether there are problems
    afoot.

I'm not denying it's something an overly fussy person might do, but I see
    some value in it.

No, I just see it from the onboard computer. I reset the trip each time I
fuel up, it gives fairly accurate miles_to_empty

OK, I am officially a sad bastard because my bike has an MPG computer, whose
output I dutifully record, and I also write down and compute the actual MPG
from the figures given by the pump. This can be entertaining during the long
cold winter months, looking at the differences, etc. I also have a record of
fuel prices over time which is definitely depressing rather than entertaining.

Getting the Morini back on the road has re-acquainted me with reliance
on just reserve taps and a Veglia odometer. Given an uncharacteristic
thirst for a Morini ('race' cam, big carbs etc,) and only a 250 sized
fuel tank this can become critical.

I reset trip meter 1 at fill up and expect about 200 miles before I
have to fill up again. Anything less than 170 miles and I know I've
been caning the crap out of it, anything more than 230 and I give
myself a stern talking to for riding like a pussy.
