Live in Sheffield, never travelled to the northwest on bike so looking for a
decent route. By car normally take A628 (woodhead) to glossop then motorway
to the northwest. I like the A628 or the A57 (snake) but I want to avoid
motorway. I want to enjoy all the journey. Specific destination is Runcorn
but if anyone can recommend a decent route with nice A/B roads I'd
    appreciate it.

To show I'm no retard expecting answers on a plate, I've looked on a map and
come up with the following route, but I have no idea what these roads are
like beyond Buxton. So alternatively, can you comment on this? Ta.

    A621 from Sheffield
    A619 to Bakewell
    A5055 to Monyash
    A515 to Buxton
    A53
    A54
    A537 to Macclesfield
    A537 to Knutsford
    A556 A559 to Northwich
    A533 to Runcorn

Interestingly enough, as an aside, I remember reading most of the roads
leading up to and around buxton are high danger spots for motorcycle
    accidents. Any particular reason why?

I think you will find that all the decent routes lead you away from
    the northwest.

You want to go from Buxton to Macc via the Congleton road out of Buxton -
wicked roads round there [1]. The route ends up being:

    Buxton >> A53 >> A54 >> A523 >> Macc

i.e. you stay on the A54 longer and turn right at Bosley lights.

[3] as many do on this route

Obviously me that is confused. I thought you were the Edinburgh chap who
turned up at a BOSM on a CBR600RR. Apologies!
