A very nice place for a single man, I hear.

In fact, paging Bruce or Adie. What was the name of that hotel I met
you at, many moons ago. It looked fairly decent.

I lived there for a year and apart from the Manekin Pis, the only place
to hang out, are the Irish bars. hic.

There's a difference between living somewhere and visiting there. I live
in London but you won't see me being ferried around on an open topped
    bus gawping at Big Ben.

and that's what my former French colleagues used to say too. They were
    also wrong.

I lived there for 9 months back in 1985 and I only recall one Irish
bar, out near the EU complex. Did a cracking range of decent pub food,
    as I recall.

I remember one night in there, getting fairly shitfaced on about seven
pints of the black stuff, spending the entire evening arguing politics
with what turned out to be an Irish MEP and one of his party boys. He
(the MEP) was from whatever Irish party was closest to communist at
that point; I was arguing on the back of being a Torygraph reader of
some years (although I have no recollectiom of the subject under
discussion). His mate, the adviser, paid me a wonderful compliment at
one point when the MEP had gone for a slash, in saying that I was
holding up my end of the argumnent pretty damn well.

Maybe I should have recognised my calling and become a politician.
Then again, getting the better of a couple of Irish communists isn't
    exactly difficult.

There's the kunstmuseum, a spectacular church or two, the grand place,
the big atomic doodad out next to the Heysel stadium, oh, and I'm sure
    lots more.

The Musée Royaux. That's worth a couple of days on its own.

Heh, the Irish are a great laugh over in BRX. There are more Irish bars
than you can shake a stick at and they (used to) have loads of do's in
    the embassy.

does Paris have anything even remotely like Dennis Sever's House or
The Soanes's[1] Museum, to name but two of London's "great little
    places"?

[1] apostrophe pedants note: this is the correct spelling.

who was talking about "tourist sights"? The general atmosphere and the
food and drink are much better than Paris.

    Ghent is better still, mind...
