Joe & I left the house at 7:30 a.m.. It was 47 degrees. Stopped at the local station, to gas up, then we headed east on 180, for about 3 miles, then took 67 North, to Graham. About 19 miles out, is what some call "flat bottoms". I call it c-c-c-cold. For the next 15 miles, I felt like a Popsicle. The temp either dropped, or I was just getting chilled. I couldn't find my thick, insulated gloves, so I was wearing my deerskin gloves. Fingers got a tad stiff but thank goodness for my throttle control. We pulled in to the parking area at Cox' Used Car Lot, where the Young County Toy Run was being hosted, at about 8:20 a.m. and breakfast was already being served. Scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, salsa, jalepenos and tortillas but the first thing I went for, was... the coffee! We ate, huddled around the big barrel stove that seemed hot enough to heat half of Young County, bought raffle tickets for the rifle and tickets for the 50/50 and then rode a bit. We had decided to forego the poker run, as it was a route that we've been on many times. We came back and got to see some friends that we haven't seen for a while. Jim, Joyce, the Garys and our long time friend John, was there. He always gets the "oldest rider" award. [1] We saw more people we already knew, met some new friends and visited a while, during a good lunch of bbq brisket, beans, tater salad, macaroni salad and iced tea. It was now 84 degrees, the sun was hot and the wind picked up and blowing to beat hell. We had already shed our leather jackets. At about 2:30 p.m., we headed home, because Joe had other plans. Yeah! We said our good-byes and left. Headed back out on 67 going south, then turned right, onto 701 to Eliasville. A drunk surveyor following a snake musta laid out that road, because there were many, many S curves, some sharper than others and totally thrilling! This was just about the best part of the day and like icing on a cake, perfect! I can tell ya right now, I'm going to be spending a lot of time, riding on that road. It's awesome. It rates up there with Hwy 4 but 701 is better, because there's many more twisties but (to me) not quite as "spooky".[2] Hwy 4 in Palo Pinto, has a couple of hairy blind curves, on a down/up grade, a few more tight S curves and some sweepers but 701 is just plain *fun*! 701 loops around and comes back out onto 67, about 9 miles north of 180, so it was a short ride on in to our place. It was almost 4:30 when we parked under the shed, right before the cold front hit. What a great day for riding, a worth cause and seeing friends again. Can't ask for better than that! Next Toy Run, Dec. 17th, at the Breckenridge VFW (Hwy 180), put on by our local club, the Texas Veterans. I'm hoping for another day like yesterday. [1] Last year, John rode his Harley (by himself), from here to British Columbia. He will soon turn 72 and he isn't slowing down any. [2] Joe thought it was kinda spooky but the only spooky thing to me, was the deer that didn't know for sure, which way to go but at least he stayed on the pasture side of the fence (near the trees) and out of the road. I was watching!
