    Better quality chain?
The gixxer thou got some Castrol chain grease every 500 miles or so. In 4000
miles I had to adjust the chain twice and only by the slightest tweak. As
it's done 6k it seems reasonable to extrapolate 12-16k life. Doesn't seem
worth the hassle of a Scottoiler at that. It's the OEM chain so no idea what
    make.

Hmm. The point is, she already has the Scottoiler, see. Chain
adjustment isn't an issue(1), as it kept lubed but being a sporty
little thing, doesn't have a centre stand so is a PITA. Mr. Scott's
machine will just make life easier - now I know how and more
importantly, where to fit it (specifically, the vacuum takeoff).

    1. OEM Honda chain, adjusted (I guess) at service and tyre changes,
never otherwise. 9K miles so far ;-)

    Hmm...

Seems like he's pretty much sorted already then other than dodgy fuel
pump electrics (IIRC the relay can fail but the horn one is the same
and will get you back home).

I saw a 250,000mile K100 (naked one!) in bits a while back and the
engine internals were in amazingly good condition. Perhaps he should
just get one of the bricks totally sorted and then blow some dosh on a
Honda NX650 to contrast nicely with the ZX9-R ;)

Check the sprocket wear. You should see far more than 10k from a DID
gold chain so perhaps the sprockets are eating it?

I just adjusted mine by 5/6th of a turn last night, after just over a
    thousand.
Hope mine does as well as that.

  8. I've always changed sprockets with the chain, so if it's excessive sprocket
wear & last time the front was really hooked then the replacement
sprockets[1] are wearing far faster than the OE ones.

[1] I am pretty certain they came as a kit chain & sprockets

Hmm, well I'd like to think the dealer would have adjusted it at it's
1000km service, i.e. about 800 km ago... maybe they didn't think it
    needed it.

My ZZR1100 has done 14,000 miles on the curent chain and sprockets. They
are a DID 50ZVM chain and Chiaravalli sprockets. The chain has been
adjusted three times and is about a quarter worn by the looks of things.
I have a scottoiler with touring resevoir fitted.

I *use* my bike and ride in all weathers, I'm surprised you're only
getting that mileage from a chain.

You ride like girl though don't you.

I did 5k miles on a new expensive chain on one of those and it was
    certainly showing signs of wear.

I may do now but back in 1987 when I had hair and did 60k miles in a
year I was more than a little throttle happy. I don't feel quite as
    immortal as I used to.

I wouldn't want to do that really. The only employer I'd
that would want my skills within about 40 miles of my home
is one I'd rather not work for.

Or at least, the only employer willing to pay what I
consider to be the market rate for my skills.

More than I had in the 70's when it comes to hair[1] and that is
bollocks that is, saying hard on the throttle and long chain life in the

The real bad news is that immortality is digital. In my case and from
the evidence presented I consider myself to be currently occupying the
state of immortality and will continue to do so until persuaded
    otherwise.

Now don't get me wrong about this reply, I'm fairly quick, but I'm no
riding god and I never will be, but I never found the need to derestrict
the ZZR. I bought it to take me and a bag of stuff from Bedford to
Scotland on a regular basis when I was seeing Beelzebub. It did that
admirably and in a great deal of comfort, but you don't need 140bhp to
trot up the A1/A66/M6/M74. When I got the job in Slough it became my
daily commuter and doing the M25 in rush hour is another time when 140bhp
is just a waste of time. Job moved to Harrow, and the same applies. It's
only occasionally that I get to play on backroads or twisties, and the
ZZR isn't really cut out for them anyway, that's why it's for sale so
that I can afford to buy a proper sports bike.

My ZZR as it is does 175mph approx, and acceleration is phenomenal, it's
quick enough for me as it is. I doubt I'd be any faster than I already am
if I had the extra 15 bhp to play with. I'm at my own personal limit with
what it has, as I demonstrated to myself on a flat out[1] ride back from
Didcot to Bedford on Monday evening. I just want something that handles a
bit better and is lighter to throw around, it doesn't need to have any
more power than I have now.

[1] Flat out to me is 'having a gentle pootle' to the likes of Champ et
    al.
