And if I can't get hold of any new clutch bits, believe me, I'll
    try it!

Found some other stuff on the net about relative merits of dear
and expensive oils, car versus bike oils, etc. Fascinating stuff,
I'm definitely going to change the oil in the bike, it's an easy
    job right?
    Good advice.
Been there, read a load of good stuff in there in the last couple
of hours, hoping I'm not doing the stuff that could piss you off,
and apologies for any going over old ground that's boring for the
    regulars.
    Cheers, Nev

  3. I believe this is the real s.t.

Same style, same spelling mistakes (check the OP) and our revered friend
    didn't use punctuation, either.

I'm beginning to think that's what's in the gearbox.
A trip down Halfords tomorrow I suspect!
Is replacing clutch springs a job for a beginner at this bike
    maintenance malarkey?
I think I will inspect everything I can see to the best of my
ability, change the oil, and see how we go. Anything to watch out
for with changing the oil, like the old X7 trick of buggering up
the gear change if you left out the washer?
No, it's a silver one, used to belong to the 125cc champion of UK
apparently, then I bought it off of his nephew. It's not a
terribly well cleaned or maintained example, but it is nearly
    original. S reg though.
    Thanks for the help, Nev

  6. I have loads of pattern piston rings for the RD400, in several
    oversizes.

    You'll need 'em.

The Dogmeister always posts from a Blueyonder IP in Enfield, London, whereas
this particular specimen is posting from a BY IP in the Aztech West area
    near Bristol.

One of the easiest you can do.

Where do you live? A surprising number of ukrm regulars will be more
than happy to come and take the piss out of you, your bike and all sorts
of other things whilst pretending to give you a hand.

  12. For a confident beginner it should pose little problem.

    This bit is very important:
When the Haynes book of lies says: Use a torque wrench set to the
correct setting when doing the spring retaining bolts up.
    It means it. Really.

I'm in Kent. Anyone wants to come round on an RD, they're gonna
be more than welcome. Especially if that clutch *does* need
    changing!

How did you end up with loads of those to get rid of? Stocking up

Dead easy. Just one bit of advice if you haven't done it before. Don't
just fill to the mark on the dipstick. Fill it to the mark and then run
it for 30 secs, stop and then check the level again, top up if required.
    Repeat until the level stabilises.
