My local BMW dealer [0] has just introduced a 10UKP per day insurance
charge [1] for loan bikes. Today, as they did not inform me when I booked
the bike in for the service, I refused to pay, which they accepted.[2]

Is this practice common at other dealers?

    Is this practice fair? [3]

    [0] Rydale Cardiff
[1] claim excess reduced to £250 from £1000
[2] as punishment they gave me one of these:

[3] after all, if there is no charge, those that do not take a loan bike
    would subsidise those that do.

  3. Probably - you have the right to go to another dealer however. I
certainly wouldn't pay it - They are getting plenty of nmoney out of
you anyway - I bet they wouldn't charge it if they thought you wanted a
test ride on a bike and were likely to buy 10 grands worth off them.

It's the sun I tell you, it's getting to him.

Ben! Come home now, before it's too late.

Vlad the Inhaler. emerged from their own little world to say
I asked that. The sales dept. do not charge for demo bikes. It would be
taking the piss if your bike was in for the inevitable warranty work as
    well.

It looks okay. Leather seats, lots of chrome. Horrible to ride. I had a
plain R1200C as a loan bike before which I rode for about 100 miles. I've
only ridden this one the 3 miles to my town house; I don't plan to ride it
anywhere else other than back to the dealer.

Cannons charge a mileage rate for any use over 70 miles IIRC. I'm not sure
what the deductable is on their insurance but I think it is around 500 quid.

The Volvo dealership where we used to get the car serviced started
making us get our own insurance to cover their car while we were using
it. So basically you phone your insurance company who issue you a cover
note for their car for the day. The insurance company did it for nothing
as long as it was "only a couple of times a year".

    Would that work with bikes?

My BMW dealer charges £15/day insurance for loan bikes when
the bike is being serviced, not when it is in for warranty.
Can't say I'm especially happy about that. If I had BMW
insurance I would not be charged.

Alright then, but don't come crying to me when you can't get aroused
    without a camel being present.

I don't know what you'd expect, the dealer will either up the price of
the service somewhere [1] or make it an identifiable charge on the bill.
Either way it just adds to the total service price.
