    What is the legal limit?

    Is there one?

My new wheelie bin is marked CE and 99dB :)

    http://www.motuk.co.uk/mcmanual_710.htm
    "1.
    a. Any part of the exhaust system missing or excessively deteriorated

    b. A leak in an exhaust system which causes excessive noise to be emitted

    c. An exhaust system mounting missing or one which is in such a
condition that it does not fully support the exhaust system.

    2. A silencer which is in such a condition or is of such a type that the
noise emitted is clearly in excess of that which would be produced by a
similar machine fitted with a standard silencer in average condition.

    3. A silencer marked 'NOT FOR ROAD USE', TRACK USE ONLY' or similar words."

My CBR's exhaust[1] was static noise tested at Rockingham on Sunday, at
97db. I was gutted, for what that exhaust system cost new I expected it
    to be much higher.

Not if it's the ACU method.

    No, 7500 rpm

I once had a bike[1] fail a static noise test at a police bike show. it
was over 100db at the 1200rpm tickover. My Firestorm was even louder.

It's a Motorsport Vision circuit, they'll test for noise, they always
    do.

    Ah right.

IIRC, over here, you can fit whatever you like as long at it's
homolgated. Well, that's the official line.

Indeed. Dobles failed my CB500 on the Predator stainless steel exhaust
that had passed for the previous 5 years (and they had passed the
previous year), and insisted that there was no wadding inside it
(riveted can, never opened)! They also failed it on the fork seals
(which they replaced themselves 4 months previously).

Utter bastards. I've never been back.

105db for MSV circuits on trackdays, such as Cadwell Park. :) ACU
noise testing testing procedure [1], carried out before any bike is
    allowed on track.

For those that know my CR500 supermoto, they just laughed and shook
their heads before I was 10metres aways from the test zone.

Do what I did to my Scorpion can and remove the marking with a Dremel.

It's the same here for new stuff. As long as it's got an 'E' mark,
    it's road legal.

I just stick insulating tape over the offending words for the MOT. The
tester isn't allowed to remove the tape to see what's underneath. It's
pointless anyway, because even with the Akrapovic can that is marked
'not for road use', it still tests at lower than the legal limit when
I've had it done for trackdays.

Your MOT man does it arse about face. According to the MOT Tester's
Manual he's obliged to fail it if he can see anything that shows it as
a race can i.e 'not for road use' or 'race use only' marked on the can,
regardless of whether it is quiet or noisy - hence I cover the
    offending words with insulating tape.

My '98 CBR600 with a full Akrapovic race system is quieter than a
standard brand new Gixer 600 K8, but would fail the MOT without that
    little bit of tape.

Well atm there is no MOT[1] for bikes, so unless bikes are stopped by
plod, most people get away with it.

[1] It's in the pipeline, apparently. **** knows why, as I've yet to
see a really SOB in France. Most people tend to look after them.

    In communiqué <>, Cab
You haven't seen my faux WR250. It's all OK mechanically, but I dare say
it will fail on a whole list of stuff - particularly in the lights
department, though at least it's got a tiny headlamp that works.
