Back in the wilderness that was my early days on proper bikes the NU limits were something low then up to 350cc before they went to unlimited. That fucked anyone buying a 400cc bike quite nicely but I thought they'd brought in the 899cc category by the elsie was born. I was paying for an unlimited cc 'rider policy' when I first owned my XS2 and that was xmas 1977 and that was about the only cover available to me whereas when I had a 250 I had a choice of several mugs willing to insure me.
Bear says... No, your memory hasn't failed you, but you have to remember that the 350LC was preceded by a few other 350s over the years that NI were issuing Rider Policies. Stuff like the CB350, YR5 Yamaha, S2 Kawasaki, Morini 3 1/2, RD350 and a few old Brit bikes as well. Their insurance brackets went Up to 100cc 101 to 225cc 226 to 350cc 351 to 600cc 601 to 900cc Unlimited
Bear says... The YR5 wasn't that much slower than a stock 350LC, and handled as well as a later RD400, same for the RD350. CB350K4s are the weapon of choice for classic racing in their class as well. Well, as much as we'd like to think so, I don't think the bods in Japan are that bothered about what the UK insurance brackets are. They build bikes of certain engine capacity to suit world markets, the UK being quite small in thjis respect. I suppose this is why the CB900 was 901cc and the GPZ900 was 908cc. 600cc is just a good middleweight size I suppose.
No. Unless you consider that the UK insurance market utterly controlled Japanese motorcycle construction.
And the 400 Four was 408cc (but 399cc in France and Japan!). And who can forget the GT380 - now there was an odd capacity. 175s and 195s were a bit off, too. The GPZ600 was really a development of the air-cooled 550. Bore centres are exactly the same and the cranks fairly similar - just beefier on the 600, really. It's not too much of an exaggeration to say the 600R is a water-cooled bored-out 550, especially as it's almost impossible to take the engine out beyond 600cc to any meaningful extent.
The Older Gentleman coughed up: The Honda CB900 fucked up a few punters when I sold motor insurance, as they had to upgrade from 900cc limit to unlimited (ISTR it was 901 or 903) We had a few unhappy motorcyclists trying to argue the toss over that one, and I have to admit I did have some sympathy with them. -- Dan L http://thebikeshed.spaces.live.com/ 1996 Kawasaki ZR1100 Zephyr BOTAFOT #140 (KotL 2005/6) X-FOT#000 DIAABTCOD #26 BOMB#18 (slow) OMF#11
