Sitting here playing HL2 (yes, it's fantastic and I really
should have gone to bed 3 hours ago but that shows just
how good it is...) when all of a sudden the pc unit about
2 feet away starts making one hell of a racket, and I
    nearly shat meself.

One of the fans had split and was clacking against the
side of the casing. Luckily they were 99p each from
ebuyer and I bought a stack of spares, so 2 minutes
    later and I'm back again...

I'm really looking forward to this, since most games this year have been a
    grave disappointment

Heh, I've been stuck on Doom3 for the last couple of weeks. I've missed
the chance of getting the BFG and now have to contend with two scary
bastards and only a rocket launcher...

    <fx: sigh> Yes, it's sad, I know...

I've been waiting for one of the follow up posts to give a clue as to
what "HL" actually stands for. I know it's a computer game, and
therefore of absolutely no interest to me, but I'd still like to know
    :)

Ta. Never heard of it, mind. But then, I prolly only know the name
of about half a dozen games.
No, y'see, that's from an area of human activity that I'm interested
    in.

I gave up as I got stuck. I think I've got to pile up the barrels
to get up high enough, but piling them up is easier said than done!

  14. Which ones?

It's been a particularly slow Summer this year but, as usual, there's some
good stuff out between now and Christmas.

    *wish* I could play HL2...

The graphics are beautiful, the AI convincing, but more than that, it feels
believeable and realistic (daft I know)

Half life was a fantasic game - I never found Halo as involving.

I'm waiting for the X-Box versions regardless but HalfLife 2 would be first
on my list just for the reason above.

It's hard to explain, but it's not just a FPS which is why it is
so playable. Having bought the first game and played it through,
then the three add-ons for it and played them through as well,
buying HL2 on the day it got released was just a given!

I'd actually recommend that you go out and buy the first game
and give that a go. Remembering that it's 6 years old now, you
should be able to pick it up cheap (I think you can get a pack
with all the add-ons in it as well)[1] and work your way through
that for the full "story". I don't want to spoil it by giving
away too much but it has a full storyline that you follow and
it's all very convincing and will make you jump quite often!

With the Doom/Quake games, it was all about killing things to
get to the next level or find a key to open the door to get to
the next level. Half-Life is more about solving puzzles along
the way to get you to your destination rather than it feeling
like you have to kill everything. In some parts you have no
ammo and have to outwhit the monsters rather than kill them,
or use other means to do so.

The other neat thing about Half-Life is that you have to
team up with Non Player Characters to complete parts of the
levels - eg the scientists, security guards (Barney) and the
clean-up troops too. For example, you have to make a scientist
follow you (and keep hi alive) because only he can open a door
that you need to get through. In the add-ons for the game, you
get to play the same story but from a different viewpoint- in
Opposing Force you play as one of the clean-up soldiers and
in Blue Shift you play as the security guard. It was all very
clever as, having played the first, you kept seeing things you
recognised but from the other person's view.

Have a go - I'm sure you'll enjoy it. Then give the second
    one a go as well!
