Pure is a good start, IMO.

I have one of these (as well as a Bug) and it is well under your budget:

And I'm not sure it's as retro as you want.

I paid about £40 for a Pure Siesta clock radio last year. I'm pretty
happy with that, although it ain't portable or retro. Sounds good
though, and is USB updatable. The display is rather too dim though.

However, doing the research, I think I'd stick with Pure or Roberts.
Bush are cheap stuff, although the DAB they do seems quite popular.

Personally, I think DAB isn't good enough to warrant spending too much
on anyway. Sound quality is clean, but dire on dynamic range, and
apparently the BBC do pinch some bit-rate from channels if there's a big
event on another. I only got it because FM around here is even worse.

    Good points.

And check that you can get a good DAB signal everywhere you want it
first. I have to switch to using FM in the kitchen, as I can't get DAB
    in there.

    Thought so...
Looks like some PoS that sat in my kitchen, about 1988, replacing a
rather nice Roberts R600, which was nicked.

How does a chap do that, without a DAB radio?

Nobody I'm aware of has one I could borrow to check.

Just about any DAB radio is OK if you keep it plugged into the mains.
Battery life is lamentably short on all of the damn things, typically
around 4 hours for a set of 6 C size Duracells.

just move it from room to room, is all.

I think your figures for battery life are out by a factor of 5,
minimum. Reviewers are quoting 20 to 120 hours, depending on the
model. Signal strength would be a factor, too.

I would agree with him about battery life. I took my DAB radio to work
with me, it lasted less than a day on 6 Duracell batteries (the next
size up from AA - D?).
I thought it was a duff set of batteries, so bought some more from a
different shop, and it again drained them in less than a days work.
It lives in the van now, with its mains lead, and only gets used if
there is a power supply I can use.

It seems that the latest models are getting a bit better but their
battery life is still abysmal compared to an ordinary FM radio.

For that you could get a nice FM radio, which will probably sound
    better.

But I'd still have to buy a DAB radio, eventually, no?

If I was looking for a FM set, I'd most likely tour the boot sales and
junk shops, to find a vintage job, TBH.

I'm getting the urge to go to WGW now. It will pass very quickly
    though.
