Right. Just finished it. Ignoring the plot holes that you could drive a
Goldwing through, it leaves me idly wondering.

All that symbology stuff, troof or bollocks?

I could go and do some research, but then I thought, why have a
    proto-Pope and bark yourself?

So AndrewR, what say you? 160 words, on my desk by Monday morning. And
    show your working out.

I'm not familiar with the book in question.

Care to give me a summary or a web-link?

Well you're fat lot of fucking good then, aren't you?
Opus Dei bad[1], American professor good. Apparently cute Frog
burd-wivva-brain[2]. Holy Grail. Moderate sex. Fair amount of violence.
    Some disability.

[1] And who'd argue with that?
[2] Except for when it doesn't suit the plot.

Right I've warned you, here it is:

At least this wasn't about the holy grail, in terms of a cup/chalice,
but of a woman (magdalene) who was christs wife, and was bearing his
child when he got himself into his spot of bother.

The child was born and thus a bloodline was secretly kept alive in
france courtesy of the Priory of Sion [1] etc.

It was entertainment of a sort, and makes you wonder slightly.

[1] which I understand is/was an actual group

    Right, um, thanks for that.

As a general (or universal) rule anything involving the Holy Grail is likely
to be bollocks (in terms of historical accuracy).

There's no biblical support for a holy grail existing nor any literary trace
of it until the late 11th century when, not to be too blunt, it was made up.

If you want questions about any other part of the book answered you'll
either have to tell me some more details of the plot or buy me a copy.

about as likely as a man rising from the dead, or a man parting the
seas, or someone feeding 5 bazillion people from just a household packet

dunno, I don't follow religion, but things like this do intrigue me a

Eco displayed how a rumour might quickly be translated into a cult (from
my reading years ago), imagine how such a rumour might flourish in more
    superstitious times.

AndrewR (or anyone else in fact) how and why are you (is he) so
    knowledgeable about these obscure topics?

    Parsi[v|f]al.

Most of it is attributed to the mistranslation as the
legend probably refers to the Arc of the Covenant.

Well it's only obscure if you don't learn about it.

There are many, many subjects of which I have a vast wealth of ignorance,
but if I turn around and look at my nearest bookshelf the titles are "The
Bible : A history", "The Chair of Saint Peter", "The Jerusalem Bible", "The
Catholic Church", "A brief history of Christianity", "The history of the
church", "The early church", "God", "The Devil : A biography" and so it
    continues.

I was interested in the subject, I read some web-pages, I bought and read
some books, I was still interested so I carried on doing the same.

I'm pretty certain it's a technique that would work for most subjects :)

If you whip away the plot, and the Opus Dei stuff, from the Da Vinci Code,
you're left with a fairly reasonable precis of the Holy Blood and the Holy
Grail: and it'll take a damn sight less long to read as well

The lost tribes of Israel predate Jesus by more than 700 years, so I'm a bit
lost as to the connection here.

Snipped all plot so no spoilers.

For a funny, evil take on that and other things sir wants the series
    of graphic novels 'The Preacher'.

I'd lay bets on AndrewR having read them.
