    from that page, though:

'Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, Archbishop of Genoa and right-hand man to
the new Pope Benedict XVI, recently said: "It astonishes and worries me
that so many people believe these lies." '

presumably followed by a vain attempt to stop sniggering.

I think Pope Bendict XVI should have said something in his first
address to the faithfull..........I feel as if I can see John Paul II's
smiling eyes and hear his words right now addressing me: 'Have no fear
and make sure you tell everybody what a crap writer that Dan Brown is'

    is'

I've just read Adam Roberts'[1] spoof "The Va Dinci Cod" - much
    recommended.

    [1] writing as A.R.R.R. Roberts.

I've just seen a poster on the tube advertising another spin-off:
    The Asti Spumanti Code

that's written by Toby Clements, who's a book reviewer for The
Telegraph. I'm happy to be proved wrong, but AFAIK it's his first
    attempt at a novel.

Adam Roberts is a real writer who's written several sci-fi books that I
really rate. Although I've not read the Da Vinci Code itself, I wanted
to see how his "spoof"[1] writing compared to his "sincere" stuff. It
    was very good.

[1] he also has a Tolkein-spoof series, but I've got less interest in
    reading that.

Well, obviously - little point in publishing a work of ironic
plagiarism in the US, is there? ;-)

I thought a 'parody' was exempt from copyright protection?

Well, I just ordered the book from amazon.co.uk. We'll see what kind of
    International Incident this causes.

If you want to read the Da Vinci Code, I'd be happy to drop my copy in
the post to you (or anyone else for that matter).

Have you read any of Adam Roberts "real" books? If not (and if you like
SF, obviously), I'd start with "Stone".
If I wanted to read "The Da Vinci Code", I could ask any of the 50 or
so saps on my floor of our office who seem to be reading it at any
point in time for a lend.

    Thanks anyway, mind.

I tried to find the criteria used for selection. All I can see is
that it is backed by the book trade ie (in my own words) "the book
most likely to increase our profits in the future".

You've read it? What didn't you like about it?

I've just finished it and *loved* it - which may say more about me than it
    does about the book.

Google for "the Da Vinci Code" and "why everyone except you on ukrm thinks
    it's a load of shite".

The answer will be somewhere in the first half million hits.
