Cynical vote grabbing?

Points on licences for speeding to drop from 3 to 2 or even 1 in some
cases... good news IMO, but is it good sense or just a vote grabber?
And I wonder how many (if any) of the cameras will go as a result of
    Darlink's review.

    Good news? Not at all.

If speed cameras are justified on the grounds of safety then they should
carry the same penalty as you'd get if stopped by the police.

Having 'speed-camera-conviction-lite' just undermines the whole system.

Sure, some people will avoid losing their licenses but... it lets the
government / police authorities off the hook. Rather than removing the
'excessive' ones they just make them less painful. And like little
sheep the electorate bleat their thanks... "tha-a-a-a-a-nk you Mr
    Blu-u-u-unket, tha-a-a-a-a-nk you very m-u-u-u-uch"

It's nice to see that the Government are listening though.
Unfortunately what they're listening to isn't the voice of the
electorate but to any potentially populist policy that the Opposition
    comes up with.

    It's pointless. (gerrit?)

People will get nicked more often because they'll feel they've got more
'lives' and will be prepared to speed more often or at higher speeds.

Hmm, I'd rather get one point than three.

The way it works in France is as below:

Up to 20kph over the limit - 1 point with 135 euro fine. (Up to
750euros if taken to court and declared by the judge.)

20 to 30kph over - 2 points. Same fine, I believe, but not in doc

30 to 40kph over - 3 points, but suspension of 3 years (the doc isn't
too clear as to whether this is "up to"

    40 to 50kph over - 4 points.

The doc, is here for the francophones:
    http://www.securiteroutiere.equipement.gouv.fr/IMG/pdf/DP_27-10-03.pdf

Also has comparison with the UK, Switzerland and the Netherlands.

This power point presentation shows you how the French radars work

    http://www.securiteroutiere.equipement.gouv.fr/IMG/zip/radars.zip

Although it doesn't say how this would work if I shopped a friend that
lived in the UK (e.g. They used my bike). It says that the fine would
be sent to them, but I seriously doubt it.

The main page also shows you where all the radars are and has a lot of
    other useful info.

    http://www.securiteroutiere.equipement.gouv.fr/infos-ref/regles/csa/csa.html

If anyone is interested, I could translate the doc above, explaining
the French viewpoint on the Dutch/English/Swiss radar systems.

Isn't it "vote grubbing", rather than "vote grabbing"?

    Not...

    OLD: 12 points for ban / 3 point penalties = 4 * £60 fine = £240.

    NEW: 12 points for ban / 2 point penalties = 6 * £60 fine = £360.

    ....then?
