Cush Rubber for back wheel, HELP!!!

Discussion in 'Motorbike Technical Discussion' started by fenning.freeserve.co.uk, May 2, 2004.

  1. I had a real problem with my bike "jolting" or what felt like banging into
gear each time i changed gear. The acceleration was never smooth, got
nothing much then it would jolt and take up as revs were turn up.
Ive just noticed play in the back wheel in the sense that when up on the
centre stand and turn by hand there was play before the chain would actually
move. Slowly turn wheel each way and got about 2" move before the chain
actually moved. Removed the wheel and the Cush rubbers are well torn up.
infact non existing on the drive side of the sprocket, hence the jolt as
slack was being taken up. Bike is a moto roma 125 only 2 years old and
only 200o miles on the clock. Any idea what would cause such wear in such
low milage. The bike had been standing appearantly for 7 months unused.

Next question, I can't find out whether the rubbers are generic from bike to
bike, This bike it appearsa has suzuki front brake calliper, Honda engine
and getting spares for this bike have been a nightmare!!!!!!
Any help or even where I may find help would be GRATEFULLY appreciated.

    Thanks

    Regards

    OH- Guest

    That does not sound good.
My guess would be some chemical that is incompatible with
whatever rubber is used. Some rubber will be very oil resistant but
is no good in alkaline liquids, some remain soft at low temperatures
but almost dissolve in petrol etc etc etc. Maybe the bike was cleaned
with some "miracle" cleaner and some got into the cuch drive (not
    normally sealed).
If this gets really difficult you can try and make replacement damper
blocks from car parts like engine mounts or suspension "grommets",
maybe even old tyres.I assure you, these blocks were not carefully
    designed by rocket scientists.
It will not be fun, rubber is IMHO a bitch to work with.
No dealer around ? Manufacturer web site ? Web search engine ?

  3. Thanks for your reply!

No, and was a bit dodgy when cornering and taking up loose drive, as the
    back wheel would sometimes spin!!!
No, you were right there was and is no seal there. I spoke to a dealer who
said there was an initial problem where the cush rubbers turned to powder!!!
take it that's what happened to mine? no powder, no rubber left on the
    drive side!!!
He did say it was reported to the manufacturer who have changed the
    compound... time will tell eh!
elsewhere, thanks for the info and tips
part, anyway! all's well that ends well
