If one was to consider a day trip back to Blighty for a bit of
shopping [1], what would be the retail location of choice? We're
looking at a Eurotunnel day trip, so within striking distance of
    Folkestone would be good.

Also, any recommendations for a good curry shop?

[1]Clothes and electricals mostly plus the chance to pick up some
    "must haves" like English ales

Ashford seemed to have plenty of shops/retail parks etc. when I was
    there.
    no idea.

I know I know, but sometimes there's nothing better than a nice
supping ale in a pint glass.

Heh, I've got mixed feelings about that, being paid in Euros but still
having a large chunk of the house proceeds in the UK.

Too right, brother exile. I usually have a few bottles kicking around
for those times when I really have to have one, but of course it's not
the same as a proper draught ale.

I know we've done this before, to the general incomprehension of some
folk here, but other things I need to be brought over on a regular
basis include Cadbury's chocolate, Heinz salad cream and almost any
    English cheese.

Indeed. If I were the OP, I'd look at the outlet stores in Ashford.
Pretty easy to get to, too.

My sterling chunk is relatively small, being just about a quarter of
the house sale price, but I'm still kicking myself for not bringing it
all out when the exchange rate was only 10% worse than when I first
    moved, IYSWIM.

On the plus side, looking at my Swiss Franc salary in GBP makes me
feel even more overpaid. Which is nice.

That would save him the time and expense of having to cross the Channel and
    changing his Euros into UKP.

  12. I remember getting funny looks from port police when I was en route to
your house with a boot-full of bottles of beer from UK.

    Heh, I was thinking http://www.jacklilley.com/ and, yes, I know it's a
    different Ashford. [1]

Since we're drifting on to the topic of motorcycles, I've just been to
the local Triumph dealer and I suspect he's being a bit naughty. Half
of the bikes have headlamps with a little arrow pointing to the left
    and this website http://danielsternlighting.com/tech/lights/codes/codes.html
    suggests this

"$B"*(B Low beam is suitable only for use in Left Hand Traffic (e.g.,
    Britain, Australia, Africa, Japan)"

    [1]Though, TBH, I didn't until a little nagging voice suggested that I
    check before posting.

When I first had an inkling that we'd be moving it was 1.45 to the
    pound :(

We don't know what the longer term holds yet, so we've hedged our bets
by having roughly half in each location.
Oh yes, though similarly, I can't quite stop doing the exchange rate
calculation and wincing when we buy anything substantial over here.

If I ever invite myself to either of your places, I'll make sure to
bring a barrel and a handpump.

Yesterday, inter alia, I had Thomas Hardy's really rather chewy
ale. V. fine, but don't have two bottles.

yes. when i imported my zx-7r into france i had to change the headlight unit
as part of homologation for exactly this reason, although there are apparently
some headlights that just dip straight down and don't need replacing.

obviously details like this, and the cost of immatriculation, are some of the
additional things to bear in mind when buying a cheap vehicle from abroad.

i don't see how this makes your dealer naughty in any way.

oh, you mean a triumph dealer in france? if so he must have falsified the
attestation de conformite in order to get immatriculation, the drire will
probably have his scrotum for a dashboard ornament.
