Crashbars

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by The Older Gentleman, Apr 24, 2011.

  1. In one of the numerous boxes of 400 Four stuff I bought in Jarrow was a
pair of brand new chrome crashbars[1], which I offered up, and couldn't
    work out how they fitted.

Scratched my head and chucked them in a corner of the garage.

Today being a nice sunny day, garage and bike furtling was on the menu,
and I unearthed them again and realised I'd been a nurk to begin with
and was sort of offering them up, back-to-front.

Yes, they fitted. NOS 400 Four crashbars - along with NOS carriers, a
sort of Anoraks' Holy Grail. What to do, what to do....

£200 all day long on eBay. OTOH, if I sold them, as sure as eggs is
eggs, I'd drop the 400 Four (probably on the exhaust side) immediately
afterwards. The exhaust is now virtual unobtainium: let the crashbars do
the task they were originally designed for.

And jolly spiffing they look too, glinting in the sunlight.

    [1] Almost cetrainly Rickman.

If 200 quid is the difference between making the rent and not, sell
them. If not, fit them and keep polishing that turd.

Tricky one; when I sold the Harley, a number of folk suggested that the
fitment of the bars detracted from the overall look and hence depressed
    the price.

If I were you, I'd fit them and let them do their job (or hopefully not)
but remove them and sell them on their own as and when you have the fire
    sale

  4. Nope. well, not to my knowledge.
    Hmmmmmmmm......

Wonder what that would cost for, say, 100 sets? The chroming would have
to be top quality: Rickman chrome was pretty good.

  5. Um, no, it's not.
I thought the posting made it plain I already had.

No idea, but almost certainly a lot less than you'd sell them for if
    they're identical to the originals.
That vet bloke who does the <something> Is Born series reckons most
modern chroming is crap compared to the good old days.

Don't be so sure. I had crash bars fitted to my 400/4. When I pranged it
(for the second time), the crash bars folded back and knocked a load of
fins off the head abd barrels. I guess there are more engine bits than
    exhausts around though.

Depends where you get it done I guess. I've always been pleased with
Vehicle and general polishers and platers. Three layers (nickel?,
copper, chrome) all nice and thick.

  10. Same thing happened when The Doctor was skittled on her CD200 Benly,
actually. Only one fin, but still.
    Indeed.

That's a good word. Is it a cross between fettling and furkling?
