Or unless it's one of the tediously regular "<insert name of some bloke
    off Radio 4> down" posts.

TBF to crn[1], they[2] do seem to close roads with an annoying
regularity, and an inordinate amount of time IMO, these days.[3]

    [1] There's a first.
[2] The traffic wombles, that is.
[3] It never 'appened in my day.

You're probably right when you say "average", but if you listen to the
traffic reports on the radio on a regular basis[1], roads being closed
for several hours is a fairly common occurrence.

No, read what I wrote, not what someone else wrote a few posts up.

I'm not saying half a day at all. I'm saying "several hours" is
"fairly common". By "several hours", I mean 4-ish and by "fairly
    common" I mean 2 or 3 times a week.

No biker is an island, entire unto itself,
But if they were it would be the Isle of Man
    ...
therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls,
**** it and go for a pint

I went up the M25 on Friday evening to find the whole fucking M4 junction
closed. No warnings, no diversion. Thankfully, my Sat-Nav[1] worked
perfectly. Would have been nice to know though, so I could've used the M3
    instead.

A few weeks back, I went up the A404 to the M40 Jct 4. Only once I'd
managed to negotiate the extrmely gridlocked roundabout was it clear
that the M40 Eastbound was totally shut. It would have been nice if
they had changed the dot-matrix sign on the A404 to read something like
"M40 closed Eastbound" rather than the "Keep left unless overtaking"
that was there instead, and which everyone ignores anyway.

    Heh.

A while back I was on the M25 heading home. The overhead signs said
"Congestion Northbound M1". "Ah well" thought I "I'll take the A1
    instead".

Turns out the reason the M1 was congested was that the A1 was closed...

  11. Yes you did, but there are differences in how the expression 'half a
day' is used and recognised. 'Half a day' to me means half a working
day, or 4 hours and I suspect it means that to a lot of other people
too, especially those from the grimier areas of the country where there
used to be lots of shift work. It's an expression which passed into
common useage in those areas from the work environment.
Doubtless it means twelve hours to those not from the grimmer areas of
the land - those who never had to go down t'pit or gut whales with their
    bare hands.
