    Greetings ukrm

I've recently had quite major head & neck surgery followed by
reconstruction and there is no way I could wear any crash helmet for a
    long long long time.
I've started driving the car (with due preparation and the blessings of
all relevant authorities), so I'm not incapable, but would really really
really like to ride the bike (full licence since 1976 etc ...) ... wind
in hair ... just like 1971 hey ho ...
Anyone kno if there is a realistic chance of getting a helmet exemption?
Or will I just have to wait for a long long long time before I ride
    again?

Let me get this straight: You've had major head and neck surgery, you're
still in such a state that you can't wear a helmet, but you want to go
whizzing about on a bike without a lid?

I realise I may be a product of the nanny state here but ffs, get a
    grip, eh?

Hmmm ... my developing facial (except one patch which is sprouting arm
hair) fungus would qualify me for that all right.
Hmmm ... (goes off to have a think).

He's probably just some old grunter who still thinks a T120 Bonnie is a
good bike and better than all this Jap Crap.

    Fucking safety nazi.

I fell off a bike whilst I needed crutches to walk and it didn't do me any
    harm.

I do remember Trev's Motorcycles and his rants against Jap Crap but I
    did not write his adverts.

I own a V-Rod. Did last time I looked anyway. (Looks) Yup - still do.

That would explain it then. There's no brain in that particular cranium
    worth protecting.

I've stored my brain in my arse since 1971 - much safer place for it to
    be.

    Probably not.

Go talk to your legal advisor and your quack. Be prepared to waste
money throwing it at the legal bods. By the time they reach a
decision, you will be broke, but healed, and you can just bung on a
    helmet and ride as before.

Yup - I'll go with all that.
(Having said that I will mention it to my GP, who might find it more
interesting than discussion of leg ulcers or flu. And as happens, I am
half-way through a little bit of business with my solicitor so not to
mention it to him would be sheer neglect.)
